Alabamas Backfield Suddenly Puts Daniel Hill In A Bigger Spotlight

Deck: Alabama's running game is getting a boost thanks to Daniel Hill's offseason transformation and leadership amidst a challenging preseason.

Alabama’s running back room has taken a few early punches in preseason camp, but Daniel Hill keeps standing at the front of the line.

With AK Dear sidelined by a scrimmage injury and EJ Crowell also missing time, Hill has become the steady presence in a position group trying to sort itself out. Offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb made it clear Monday that Hill’s rise has been about more than just carrying the ball.

“Daniel Hill is, if I was picking guys that have had a lot of growth on this football team, Daniel would be one of the biggest ones,” Grubb said Monday. “Just not only physically how he’s transformed his body, but just also his maturities, understanding preparation, schematically, his knowledge.

I mean, you just hear him lining guys up and intelligent football players. So I just, I think the world of him.

He’s put a lot of work into being one of our workhorses.”

Hill handled 75 carries for 284 yards and six rushing touchdowns in 2025, making him Alabama’s top returning scorer from last season. He also added a receiving touchdown. The Meridian, Mississippi native has spent the offseason reshaping his body, getting leaner in what Grubb previously called a “transformation.”

“I’ve gotten faster,” Hill said earlier in camp. “I wasn’t the fastest last year, and that’s something that I had to work on. And throughout the summer, like I said, coach (Dave) Ballou, gave me a plan with the workouts.”

That kind of development matters even more with Alabama trying to reboot a ground game that ranked among the worst in the FBS level in 2025. Hill is the most experienced back in the room, and Kevin Riley is the other returning piece.

“Kev, same thing, maturity, knowledge of the offense,” Grubb said. “He’s a bright kid, consistently trying to work on keeping his weight up. He’s got good twitch, just trying to be a little more heavy-handed in the run game, which I know he’s working on.”

Dear had been one of the brighter camp stories before his lower-body injury. He put together a strong first scrimmage, but he is expected to miss time. Sources told AL.com the injury is not season-ending.

Crowell’s situation is different, though still encouraging for Alabama. The former five-star back missed the scrimmage, but Grubb said the staff expects him back soon.

“Sooner than later, he’ll be back,” Grubb said. “Definitely not season-ending. Fully expecting to be ready for the first football game.”

While the veterans and injured backs work their way through camp, Trae’shawn Brown has emerged as the surprise name in the room. The three-star freshman has put himself in position to make an impact, and that becomes even more important with two players dealing with injuries.

Grubb also pointed to the influence of running backs coach Robert Gillespie in keeping the group on track.

“(Coach Robert Gillespie is) the best, man,” Grubb said. “He’s a stud.

His vision and his coaching style is very consistent, and so that I think just breeds consistency in the room where you know nothing changes. The standard’s the standard.

He keeps guys moving forward.”

Alabama Already Faces An EJ Crowell Question It Didn't Want

A lower-body injury has put freshman Alabama running back EJ Crowell on the shelf just as the preseason competition is starting to sharpen, and the timing is less than ideal for a player the Tide have been eager to see in a fuller role. Crowell missed Thursdays scrimmage and Mondays practice, another brief setback in a stop-and-start arrival that has already included injury issues since he got to campus.

Offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb has tried to keep the focus on the long view, expressing optimism that Crowell will be back soon and should be ready for the season opener. For Alabama, the hope is simple enough: get the freshman healthy, get him on the field, and find out whether the flashes he has shown when available can translate into something more meaningful once the games begin to count. Alabama's QB Battle May Be Reaching A Brutal Week For Austin Mack

The quarterback competition at Alabama has reached the point where the calendar may matter almost as much as the reps. Kalen DeBoer has made clear he would like to settle the job soon after the final fall camp scrimmage, with the staff trying to give the offense some much-needed continuity before the season begins. For now, the battle is centered on Austin Mack, a fourth-year player, and Keelon Russell, the sophomore who has worked himself into the thick of it.

Mack has stayed in the mix long enough to keep this from feeling settled, but the next few days could still be decisive in a fight that has already put real pressure on the veteran. Even if the answer does not come immediately, Alabama is clearly heading toward a choice it hopes will steady the entire offense, and the tension around that decision is only going to sharpen as the scrimmage approaches. Alabamas Quarterback Race Is Starting To Reveal Something Important

Alabamas 10th preseason camp practice offered another glimpse into how the quarterback competition is unfolding, even without the full-on offense-versus-defense setting fans usually crave. With media watching only a portion of the workout in Tuscaloosa, the session leaned heavily on group and individual work, which still gave a useful look at the rotation between Austin Mack and Keelon Russell while the staff kept sorting through battles along the offensive line.

The other notable development was the return of Lotzeir Brooks, who was back on the field and appeared to be fully involved after missing the previous scrimmage. Kalen DeBoer also spent a significant stretch working with the defense, a reminder that camp remains a broad evaluation process rather than a single-position showcase, and this one wrapped up after the seventh period with more questions than answers still hanging in the air.
