Alabama Offers 2028 QB Kingston Preyear, One of the State’s Best
The quarterback pipeline in Tuscaloosa is alive and well-and it’s already looking strong deep into the 2028 recruiting cycle. Alabama extended an offer to one of the state’s brightest young stars, Kingston Preyear, a four-star quarterback out of Benjamin Russell High School in Alexander City, Alabama. And if you’re wondering whether the Tide are still a force in quarterback recruiting under Kalen DeBoer and general manager Courtney Morgan, here’s your answer: they haven’t missed a beat.
Preyear, a 6-foot-3, 185-pound dual-threat talent, is currently ranked as the No. 3 quarterback in his class and the top overall prospect in Alabama. The offer came in on January 19, and for a kid who grew up with Crimson Tide dreams, it was a moment years in the making.
“It’s truly a blessing growing up as a ‘Bama kid and a ‘Bama fan,” Preyear said. “I’ve watched them since I was little, and now I have the opportunity to possibly play for them in the next two to three years. It’s a dream come true.”
This isn’t just a feel-good story about a local kid getting a shot. Preyear’s sophomore season was nothing short of electric.
He completed 181 of 293 passes (62%) for 3,026 yards, 34 touchdowns, and just five interceptions. Add in 518 rushing yards and two more scores on the ground, and you’re looking at a quarterback who can hurt defenses in multiple ways.
He led Benjamin Russell to a Class 6A semifinal appearance, and he’s just getting started.
The offer from Alabama came via new quarterbacks coach Bryan Ellis, who recently moved into the role from coaching tight ends. Ellis made the call to Preyear’s head coach, Kirk Johnson, who then patched in Preyear so Ellis could deliver the news himself.
“He said he loved my game and he loved my size,” Preyear recalled. “My coach was telling him I’m coachable, and (Ellis) said he loved that part of me as well.”
The early connection between Preyear and Ellis seems to be taking shape quickly.
“He’s cool to talk to,” Preyear said. “I can be me around him.
I can be Kingston Preyear around him. I don’t need to sugarcoat anything, and he doesn’t either.
We talk to each other with respect and we talk freely.”
There’s also a familiar face already in Tuscaloosa who wasted no time reaching out-Cederian Morgan, a former teammate of Preyear’s at Benjamin Russell and now an early enrollee wide receiver at Alabama. Morgan had a monster senior season with 82 catches for 1,419 yards and 16 touchdowns, and he’s already recruiting his former QB to join him again.
“Me and Cederian talk almost every single day,” Preyear said. “He was the first person to call me after I announced the offer.
He said, ‘You know where home is at. Let’s get that duo back together and take over the world.’”
Preyear’s admiration for Alabama runs deep, and his favorite Tide player of all time? That would be Jalen Hurts, now a Super Bowl MVP with the Philadelphia Eagles. “Hurts is my all-time favorite,” he said simply.
While Preyear hasn’t had much direct interaction with head coach Kalen DeBoer just yet, he’s already impressed with what he’s seen. “I know that he wins,” Preyear said.
And it’s not just Alabama that’s taken notice of Preyear’s talent. Over the past few months, he’s picked up offers from Tennessee, Florida, and Arizona.
Vanderbilt, Ole Miss, Auburn, Colorado, Houston, Purdue, Troy, FIU, and Georgia State round out a growing list of 13 offers. The attention is only ramping up as he heads into a critical offseason before his junior year.
“It’s great,” Preyear said of the national buzz. “It’s every kid’s dream to get this type of recognition.
It’s all God. I couldn’t do any of this without God or my family.
It’s all the sacrifices my mom and dad make for me each and every day. It’s truly a blessing.”
Preyear is no stranger to Tuscaloosa. He’s been to Alabama games, camps, and visits over the years.
This past fall, he was in the stands for the Wisconsin and Tennessee matchups. He’s walked the halls of the Mal Moore Athletic Complex and stood under the lights at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
Now, he’s eyeing a return visit-this time, with a scholarship offer in hand.
“I’ve been there a lot,” he said. “I went to a camp last summer. I’ve been to kid camps growing up.”
When he does make it back to campus, Preyear knows exactly what he’s looking for.
“Walking into a family that will take me and my immediate family in,” he said. “Somewhere I can call home for the next three to four years, so I don’t have to jump into the transfer portal every year.”
Alabama has already built a strong quarterback foundation under DeBoer, with Keelon Russell (No. 2 QB in the 2025 class), Jett Thomalla (No.
5 QB in 2026), and Tayden Kaawa (three-star in 2026) all in the fold. Four-star Trent Seaborn is committed in 2027, and the Tide are trending toward landing No. 1 overall quarterback Elijah Haven in that same class.
Now, Kingston Preyear is the next name to watch. He’s got the tools, the numbers, the mindset-and now, the offer.
The Tide may have changed leadership, but the standard remains the same. And if Preyear’s path continues on its current trajectory, Alabama’s quarterback room could be in very good hands well into the next decade.
