Alabama Suddenly Has A Bigger Problem Than Just Losing To Tennessee

Despite recent setbacks on the football field, including a key loss to Tennessee and mounting injuries, Alabama's athletic program sees bright spots with dominant softball performances and commendable effort from the women's soccer team.

Alabama came out of Knoxville with far more than just a loss. The Crimson Tide got handled by Tennessee 26-10 in the Third Saturday in October matchup, and the performance raised fresh questions on both sides of the ball.

The offense never found much rhythm and finished with only 201 total yards. Alabama’s lone touchdown came after being set up in the red zone, which only underscored how little the Tide generated on their own. The game plans were so hard to make sense of that the result now has people wondering about the future of both OC Ryan Grubb and DC Kane Wommack.

The timing makes the setback sting even more. Alabama opened 5-0 and had built some margin for error in the College Football Playoff chase, but back-to-back losses have wiped that away.

If the Crimson Tide want to avoid a second missed playoff in three seasons under Kalen DeBoer, winning out is now the cleanest path. For the moment, Alabama sits squarely on the CFP bubble, and after last week’s brief shift in sentiment around DeBoer and this team, the conversation is right back where it started.

The night in Knoxville also brought injury trouble. Alabama was already shorthanded after the Georgia game, which knocked out starters Ryan Coleman-Williams, Terrance Green, and Racin Delgatty, all of whom missed the Tennessee game.

Then against the Vols, Zabien Brown and EJ Crowell both went down in the second quarter and never returned. Brown has been Alabama’s best and most reliable defensive back over the last two seasons, while Crowell is the most explosive back on the roster, so both absences mattered.

There should be more clarity after DeBoer’s press conference on Monday, but for now those injuries add another layer of concern to a rough weekend.

The latest rankings reflect the damage. Alabama dropped to No. 13 in both the AP and Coaches Polls after not moving at all last week despite the three-point loss to Georgia. This time, the 16-point defeat to Tennessee sent the Tide tumbling and left them outside the College Football Playoff picture for now.

Elsewhere, Alabama women’s soccer had a tight one go the other way against No. 2 Vanderbilt. The Crimson Tide fell 2-1 at home in a battle for the top of the SEC standings.

Alabama struck first in the 19th minute when Kiley Kukan scored, but Vanderbilt answered before halftime on a penalty from Courtney Jones. Megan Hinnenkamp delivered the winner for the Commodores in the 65th minute.

Afterward, head coach Wes Hart pointed to the quality of the opponent and was pleased with his team’s overall effort. "We ran into a good team today," Hart said."

I thought we played well; I was not disappointed. I thought our effort was fantastic.

There was better news in fall ball, where Alabama softball rolled through four games over the weekend and piled up four shutouts. The Tide beat Jones College 10-0 and West Alabama 7-0 on Saturday, then took both games of a Sunday doubleheader against the University of Mobile, winning 11-0 and 3-0.

The first game on Sunday was the headliner, with Jocelyn Briski throwing a perfect game and striking out 15 of the 21 batters she faced. In the second game, Noelani Livingstone and Torynn Slaughter each went deep in the 3-0 win.

Tennessee's Celebration Just Added Another Twist To This Alabama Rivalry

Tennessees latest win over Alabama already carried the usual rivalry weight, and now it has come with an SEC penalty attached. The league fined the Volunteers $500,000 after fans rushed the field following the victory, a scene that has become familiar in college football but still runs afoul of conference policy when it crosses the line into the competition area.

For Alabama, the detail that stands out is where that money is headed. The fine will be paid to the Crimson Tide, while Tennessee does have a path to argue for a reduction if it can show it took steps to prevent the breach or that contact was minimal. The SEC also leaves room for schools to stage on-field celebrations, but only if they submit procedures in advance and get them approved, which gives this rivalry another layer of paperwork to go with the emotion. Alabama Faces A Brutal Truth After Tennessee Exposed This Weakness

Alabamas trip to Tennessee turned into a blunt reminder of where things stand after a 26-10 loss that sent the Crimson Tide into consecutive regular-season defeats for the first time since 2007. ESPN analyst Greg McElroy pointed to the line of scrimmage as the defining issue, with Tennessee dictating play and Alabama unable to match the Volunteers physical edge.

The offensive problems only made the night harder to absorb, as turnovers and an ineffective rushing attack left Alabama searching for answers. Tennessees strong ground game helped control the flow throughout, and now the Tide head into an important rebound spot against Texas A&M with pressure to respond quickly. [Read more 🡒]

Alabama Faces A Bigger Question Than Just The Tennessee Loss

Alabamas 26-10 loss to Tennessee would have been enough to force a reset on its own, but the bigger issue coming out of the weekend is the injury list that kept the Crimson Tide from looking like itself. Head coach Kalen DeBoer spent time afterward updating the status of Zabien Brown, EJ Crowell, Ryan Coleman-Williams, Racin Delgatty and Terrance Green, a reminder that the season is being shaped not just by results, but by who is available to take the field.

The encouraging part for Alabama is that the group is being handled on a week-to-week basis, with some players expected back at practice soon. Still, until those bodies return and the Tide can see how quickly they regain rhythm, the conversation around the program is going to be about depth, availability and whether the roster can stabilize fast enough to keep the loss from turning into something more lasting.
