The Alabama Crimson Tide pulled off a thrilling comeback victory against the Tennessee Vols, securing a 71-69 win on the road. This victory marked Alabama's eighth consecutive win, improving their record to 22-7 overall and 12-4 in the SEC.
Meanwhile, Tennessee now stands at 20-9 overall and 10-6 in conference play. Notably, this win also snapped a five-game losing streak for Alabama against Tennessee.
Labron Philon made his presence felt after missing the previous game. Although he didn’t start, Philon hit a crucial three-pointer five minutes in, getting Alabama on the board with a 5-3 deficit. The first half was tough for Alabama, trailing 40-28 at halftime as Tennessee dominated the offensive glass.
Alabama struggled in the first half, shooting just 37% from the field and committing eight turnovers. Latrell Wrightsell led the team with 11 points, while Philon added eight. On the other hand, Tennessee shot 40% and grabbed an impressive 28 rebounds, with Ja’kobi Gillespie scoring 15 points and dishing out four assists.
Philon started the second half, and Alabama came out with renewed energy. Aden Holloway, who was scoreless in the first half, hit a couple of early three-pointers to help close the gap.
Despite Tennessee's attempts to pull away, Alabama kept clawing back, eventually tying the game. Philon then hit a crucial floater to give Alabama their first lead at 71-69, which they held onto for the win.
In the second half, Alabama shot 52% from the field and was strong at the free-throw line, finishing 11-13 overall. Wrightsell led the scoring with 25 points, hitting 6-9 from deep, while Philon scored 23 points, taking over late in the game. Holloway added 12 points, and Aiden Sherrell contributed with eight rebounds and four blocks.
Defensively, Alabama clamped down, holding Tennessee to 37% shooting in the second half and shutting them out from beyond the arc. Gillespie was a standout for Tennessee with 26 points and seven assists, but it wasn’t enough to fend off Alabama's surge.
This win positions Alabama as one of the hottest teams in the nation, clinching a top-four seed and a double bye in the SEC Tournament. With two regular-season games left against Georgia and Auburn, Alabama has a chance to further solidify their standing.
