Alabama fans are feeling the sting of a surprising SEC Tournament exit after the Crimson Tide fell to the Ole Miss Rebels, 80-79, in a nail-biter on Friday in Nashville. This one-and-done scenario wasn't what anyone expected from a team that had been riding high with an 8-1 finish to the regular season. Meanwhile, Ole Miss, who had struggled with a 1-8 record, flipped the script in the tournament.
The Rebels came in hot, having already taken down Georgia and Auburn to reach the quarterfinals. They exploited Alabama's shaky first-half defense, putting up a season-high 47 points.
As Alabama's coach Nate Oats candidly admitted at halftime, "Defense was awful. I mean, too easy.
No resistance."
Although Alabama tightened up defensively in the second half, the offensive firepower just wasn't there. The Crimson Tide, known for their prolific three-point shooting, fell short of their average with only nine made threes out of 29 attempts. This was a stark contrast to their previous performance against Ole Miss, where they attempted 45 threes.
Latrell Wrightsell Jr., typically a reliable shooter, had a rare off night, going scoreless in his 23 minutes on the court. However, Labaron Philon stepped up, delivering an impressive 28 points on 9 of 16 shooting, along with four rebounds and four assists, while keeping turnovers to a minimum.
Despite trimming a double-digit deficit to just one point, Alabama couldn't quite close the gap. They also struggled on the boards, ending the game with a -6 rebounding margin.
Now, all eyes turn to Sunday, when Alabama will find out their NCAA Tournament seeding. With projections placing them as a 3-seed, the Tide will be looking to regroup and make a deep run in March Madness.
