Alabama faced a significant challenge entering the NCAA Tournament without their star guard, Aden Holloway. Despite having played four games earlier in the season without him, the Tide seemed unprepared for his absence during the big dance. This scenario also put a spotlight on Jalil Bethea, a former five-star recruit who hasn't quite found his footing.
Bethea, who transferred from Miami after a lackluster freshman year, was expected by many to step up. However, his sophomore season has been marred by an untimely summer injury, leaving him struggling to make an impact. In Alabama's 90-70 victory over 12th-seeded Hofstra, Bethea played only five minutes, contributing minimally to the Tide's efforts.
Coach Nate Oats opted for a larger lineup to fill the void left by Holloway, choosing 6-foot-8 London Jemison to start alongside Aiden Sherrell, while Amari Allen shifted to small forward. This adjustment allowed Taylor Bol Bowen to shine off the bench with 15 points and three blocks in 21 minutes, maintaining Allen in his optimal position at the three. The backcourt was managed by Latrell Wrightsell and Houston Mallette alongside Labaron Philon.
Oats’ strategic lineup changes bolstered Alabama's defense, but offensive challenges persisted as the team shot just 33 percent from beyond the arc. Philon was heavily relied upon for on-ball creation, a role Bethea was hoped to fill. Yet, in his brief time on the court, Bethea went 0-1 from the field with just one assist.
With Philon returning after withdrawing from the NBA draft, Alabama's roster was poised to be guard-centric. However, Bethea's stalled development as a secondary playmaker has limited the Tide's flexibility.
This season, Alabama has had to rely on a three-guard lineup featuring Philon, Holloway, and Wrightsell for significant minutes. Now, with Holloway sidelined, Oats faces limited options.
Looking ahead, Alabama's path only gets tougher with a matchup against No. 5 seed Texas Tech looming. Given Bethea's limited role against Hofstra, it seems unlikely that Oats will turn to him for significant contributions in the upcoming Round of 32.
