Josh Pate’s latest College Football Playoff projections come with a familiar-looking top and a few twists once the bracket starts to take shape.
At the top, Pate slots Notre Dame in at No. 1, followed by No. 2 Ohio State as the Big Ten champion, No.
3 Georgia as the SEC champion and No. 4 Miami as the ACC champion.
Under that setup, all four would earn first-round byes.
Pate’s bracket gets more interesting in the 5-12 range. He has Indiana at No. 5 and Boise State at No. 12 as the highest-ranked Group of 6 program. In his forecast, Indiana would draw Miami in a 4-5 quarterfinal, setting up a rematch of the last national championship.
One of the more notable first-round games in Pate’s projection features No. 8 Alabama against No.
9 USC, with the Trojans making their first Playoff appearance. Even so, Pate doesn’t see USC sticking around long, as he has Alabama advancing to face top-seeded Notre Dame.
Elsewhere in the bracket, Pate has No. 7 Texas beating No.
10 Texas Tech, the Big 12 champion, and No. 6 Oregon handling No.
11 Oklahoma.
From there, his quarterfinal winners are Notre Dame over Alabama, Miami over Indiana, Texas over Ohio State and Oregon over Georgia. In the semifinals, Pate has Notre Dame beating Miami and Oregon getting past Texas, before Miami goes on to win its first national championship since the early 2000s.
The 2026 Playoff format will include some changes. Each Power 4 champion will receive an automatic bid, the highest-ranked Group of 6 team will also get in regardless of conference title status, and Notre Dame will earn a spot if it finishes in the top 12 of the Playoff rankings.
