The 2026 Alabama football season starts Saturday morning in Tuscaloosa, and the Crimson Tide get their first chance to answer the questions that have followed them all offseason.
Kalen DeBoer’s team opens against East Carolina at Bryant-Denny Stadium at 11 a.m. CT on Sept. 5, looking to rebound from a 2025 season-opening loss at Florida State that snapped Alabama’s 23-game run of winning openers. This one brings a very different tone: a home date, a new quarterback and a long list of things Alabama spent the offseason trying to clean up.
The biggest spotlight will be on Keelon Russell, who is set for his first collegiate start after logging two games and fewer than 40 career snaps. What Alabama does on the ground may matter just as much. Alabama, meanwhile, spent its offseason building more size and force in its pass rush, with Yhonzae Pierre and USC transfer Devan Thompkins leading that effort. If the Tide can get after the quarterback early, that front could be vulnerable.
The offense still carries the biggest unknowns, even if some jobs now appear settled. Russell is in place at quarterback, William Sanders and likely Jayvin James are set on the offensive line, and the running back and receiver rooms have a clear order. But this is still a new-look group trying to rev up both the run game and an explosive passing attack.
Even with those questions, the mood around Alabama heading into this opener sounds less like caution and more like anticipation. After eight months of work, the Tide seem ready to show what they’ve built.
