Alabama Offensive Concerns Just Got More Personal Around Keelon Russell

Can Alabama's offense adapt to Keelon Russell's struggles as former QB Jake Coker questions his grasp of the Tide's strategy?

Former Alabama quarterback and national champion Jake Coker didn’t mince words when discussing Keelon Russell and the current state of Alabama’s offense after the Tide’s loss to Tennessee.

Alabama’s attack is coming off its roughest showing of the year, a 26-10 defeat that featured a stalled offense and Russell’s worst outing as a starter. The quarterback finished with 147 passing yards and two interceptions as the Tide struggled to sustain any real rhythm.

Speaking on “The Last Call With Mick Gillespie And Jake Coker,” Coker said he would simplify things for Russell if he were in the room.

“Probably, I would try to dumb it down for Keelon a little bit,” Coker said. “I mean, and again, I’m not in those meetings.

I’m not sure what their specific rules are when you have that much trouble running the ball. When things looked clean, guys knew what they were doing and playing with confidence; I mean, we had some good runs.

But I go back and look at that first half, and it’s like every play. There was something that just created some kind of catastrophic scenario in the backfield.

But the problem is we don’t have any drives in that game where we’re not putting ourselves behind the sticks. Shit, we only scored… we got a punt on, like, the 50-yard line and then we got that interception.

We didn’t put together a single drive on offense. I guess the only thing you can do against Tennessee, I mean, again, we didn’t try to run the ball enough, in my opinion, but at the same time, you’re sitting there watching, and it’s like, man, how much do I trust these guys to be able to run anything?”

Coker also said Alabama appeared to use the run-pass option game to keep Tennessee honest, but he questioned whether Russell fully understands what those concepts are designed to do.

“I mean, I don’t know, and then when we throw the ball, there’s Keelon’s getting pressure, or we try the RPO game to kind of make them be honest,” Coker said. “I don’t feel like we’re creating a clean picture for Keelon, and I don’t feel like Keelon truly understands the strengths and weaknesses of what these RPOs are trying to exploit.

Our RPO rules were pretty simple. I mean, they were; it was basically a number game.

I mean, if the numbers are there, if you got the guys to block this, then you hand it off. If you don’t, then you throw it.

The concepts off those were pretty simple. We’d have just an outlet if you had really, really off coverage; then you can take that, throw it here and there.

Our emphasis is running the football. I mean, we ran the football.

We were physical. We had Derrick (Henry), we had Kenyan (Drake.)

We had Damien Harris. We had a bunch of guys that could run the ball.

We had a physical offensive line. I just don’t remember.

I didn’t feel like there were a whole lot of plays, and we ran the ball a bunch. I just don’t remember this many plays where you just had catastrophic penetration all over the place and backs trying to cut and make plays just to not to get tackled in the backfield.”

Alabama now turns its attention to Texas A&M, with the offense hoping to get back to the level it showed earlier this season on Saturday.

Alabama's New Rotation Already Has A Few Names Fans Need To Watch

The first look at Alabamas preseason rotation came in a familiar setting, with the Tide meeting Auburn in an exhibition game in Birmingham as part of the build-up to the regular season. Even without the result carrying any record-book weight, the game offered an early peek at how Nate Oats may sort through his roster, and the opening stretches were heavy on the kind of minute-by-minute clues fans tend to track this time of year.

What stood out most was how quickly some names began to separate themselves in the box score, with the first-half numbers showing who was getting touches, who was defending well and who was already earning extended run. There is still plenty of time for roles to shift before the games start counting, but this was exactly the sort of preseason test that can shape the conversation around Alabamas rotation for weeks to come. Alabama Showed Something Tide Fans Will Love In Auburn Clash

Alabama got a useful early test in Birmingham and passed it with a narrow 87-85 win over Auburn in an exhibition game at Legacy Arena. The Tide showed a balanced scoring punch, with four players reaching double figures and Amari Allen leading the way with 23 points, a sign of depth that should catch the attention of Alabama fans as the season approaches.

Auburn made it plenty uncomfortable, with Kevin Overton pouring in 26 points and the game turning chippy at times as the physicality ramped up. Tahaad Pettiford and Bukky Oboye both fouled out in the scuffle-filled matchup, leaving plenty to sort through for both sides, but Alabamas ability to answer in a game like this is exactly the kind of takeaway Tide supporters will like.
