Alabama May Have Its Next Shutdown Corner In Dijon Lee Jr

Kane Wommack's faith in Dijon Lee Jr. as a potential shutdown cornerback could be the key to Alabama's defensive success.

Alabama’s secondary has a chance to be the unit that changes everything, and Dijon Lee Jr. is right at the center of that conversation.

While much of the offseason attention has gone to Zabien Brown, Bray Hubbard and Keon Sabb, Lee has already done enough to force his way into the spotlight. PFF College placed him first among Alabama players in its 2026 PFF College 50, slotting him at No. 38 overall.

As of Tuesday morning, only players ranked No. 50 through No. 31 had been unveiled, with 10 more names set to be revealed each day leading into Fourth of July weekend. For a true sophomore, that kind of recognition says plenty.

PFF’s evaluation made the case plainly:

"Lee emerged as one of the best cornerbacks in the SEC as a true freshman last season. He picked off two passes while breaking up five others en route to earning an excellent 80.2 coverage grade.

His 6-foot-4 frame and terrific zone coverage technique allow him to shut down his side of the field. He and the rest of Alabama’s secondary will make life very difficult for opposing offenses again in 2026."

That last part is the one that matters most for Alabama. Lee’s ability "to shut down his side of the field" gives the Crimson Tide something most defenses spend years trying to find: a corner who can erase one half of the field.

Playing across from Brown only strengthens that possibility. It could lead opponents to test Lee more often, but it also opens the door for Alabama to turn its back end into a no-fly zone.

And if Alabama can play from ahead, that secondary can become a real weapon in closing out games. The Crimson Tide still have to run the football, but the coverage talent on the back end gives them a much cleaner path to controlling things late.

That matters even more because Alabama’s front seven does not project as the same kind of strength. Yhonzae Pierre may be the name leading the pass rush, but the Crimson Tide need USC transfer Devan Thompkins to make a real impact. With that in mind, having a true sophomore already flashing the kind of coverage skills Lee showed last season is a major advantage for Kane Wommack and Maurice Linguist.

It also changes how the staff can attack the rest of the defense. If Lee keeps trending upward, Wommack can spend more of his attention on other areas, while Linguist has the freedom to get more creative on the back end. Kalen DeBoer can also stay focused on helping Ryan Grubb run the football.

That is the kind of luxury elite teams enjoy. One position group is so solid that it frees up everyone else.

Alabama has that in the secondary, with Brown, Hubbard, Sabb and Red Morgan all giving the Tide options at corner, safety and HUSKY. Lee is a huge part of why that group looks so dangerous.

For Alabama, the upside is obvious. A true sophomore corner is already playing like a shutdown piece, and he is doing it while learning alongside upperclassmen who can help push him even further. With a favorable schedule to start, Alabama has every reason to expect confidence from the opening whistle.

Alabama's Loaded QB Room Just Got Hit With Another National Snub

Alabamas quarterback battle remains one of the biggest early questions around the program, with redshirt freshman Keelon Russell and redshirt junior Austin Mack still competing for the starting job in fall camp. The room has no shortage of talent, either, with five-star true freshman Jett Thomalla adding even more depth to a group that looks built for the long haul.

Still, CBS Sports recent Top 10 college football quarterback room rankings left Alabama on the outside, a reminder that national lists tend to lean heavily on proven starters. That omission may say more about experience than upside, especially with Russell already drawing some dark-horse Heisman Trophy buzz, but it does keep the pressure on a position group that is expected to be a strength even before the depth chart is settled. Alabama May Be Closing In On A Massive 2028 Recruiting Domino

Alabamas 2028 class is still in its early stages, but the Tide already have a few pieces in place and are working to keep the momentum rolling. One of the biggest names on the board is four-star defensive lineman Chase Foster of IMG Academy, who has come away impressed with Alabamas staff, especially defensive line coach Coach Roach, and is planning to get back to campus for a game this fall.

The quarterback picture is also starting to take shape, with Kingston Preyear expected to make his decision soon and Alabama viewed as a major player there. There is more behind the scenes, too, as the Tide continue to stay in touch with receiver JaHyde Brown, giving the class another potential path forward if the early dominoes keep falling the right way. Former Alabama Star Collin Sexton Is Finally Getting The Chance He Wanted

For a player who has already worn four different NBA uniforms, Collin Sextons next stop gives him something he has not really had before: a chance to matter on a team with bigger September expectations than April questions. The former Alabama standout has signed a new deal that puts him in position to chase meaningful games on a roster built to contend, a different kind of stage than the ones he found in Cleveland, Utah, Charlotte and Chicago.

Sexton has spent much of his pro career as an energetic guard trying to carve out stability from stop-and-start opportunities. Now the appeal is obvious, even if the exact fit still has to play out. This is his first shot at joining a legitimate contender, and for a player who has spent years looking for the right basketball home, the timing could hardly be better. [Read more 🡒]
