Alabama Just Got Unexpected Help In The Playoff Debate

Alabama's win over Mississippi State remains a crucial feather in their cap for the College Football Playoff race, despite changing perceptions of the Bulldogs' current strength.

No matter how the rest of Alabama’s 2026 season shakes out, the Crimson Tide already have one win the College Football Playoff committee is treating as a real asset: Mississippi State.

That’s the odd twist in Tuesday’s first rankings, where Alabama landed at No. 5 and CFP chair Hunter Yurachek pointed to the Tide’s 56-23 road win over the Bulldogs as one of the key victories on the résumé. It’s a result that looks even stranger now, because Mississippi State has dropped four straight games and sits at 4-4 with Vanderbilt, Auburn and Ole Miss still ahead.

Still, Yurachek made it clear the committee isn’t judging that game by Mississippi State’s current record alone.

“I think many forget that they went on the road and beat Mississippi State when Mississippi State was undefeated and at full strength,” Yurachek said on ESPN. “We really valued that as a strong win for Alabama back there in the early part of the season when Mississippi (State), they had that quarterback in Kamario Taylor who was very, very good and Mississippi State was on a roll at that time.”

The question naturally followed: if Mississippi State keeps sliding, does that win lose its shine?

Yurachek said the committee already has its answer.

“It is from the eyes of the committee,” Yurachek said. “I think that’s where the committee can take the human element in.

Mississippi State from a computer aspect would fall some. But the human element and the discussion we had in the room, we recall the team Mississippi State was back in September, early October before their quarterback was injured.

They were 4-0 and had gone on the road and had really dismantled a Minnesota team and looked very good in doing so.”

The Bulldogs’ profile was stronger when Alabama saw them. Mississippi State was 4-0 at the time, coming off that win over Minnesota and then a victory over Missouri, which was ranked No. 18 in the first CFP rankings. Alabama then handled that version of Mississippi State with ease.

“Alabama went in there and really took care of business and dominated that game,” Yurachek said. “The committee will, I think, always view that as a quality game, regardless of what the computer may say about the strength of that game.”

The rankings will keep changing every week until the first week of December, when the final set that determines the 12-team field arrives on Dec. 6.

Alabama Heads Into LSU Week With One Big Availability Problem

Alabamas first availability report for LSU week put a familiar kind of pressure on the depth chart, with five starters and one key running back listed as questionable because of injuries. There is some optimism around several of those players, including Ryan Coleman-Williams, Terrance Green and Racin Delgatty, but the early read still leaves the Tide sorting through a few important spots before Saturday.

The bigger concern is the uncertainty around others such as Zabien Brown, Will Sanders and EJ Crowell, because the way Alabama handles LSU will depend heavily on who can actually suit up. In a matchup where depth and efficiency matter as much as star power, the Tide may not know until later in the week just how much of its usual rotation it can count on. [Read more 🡒]

Alabama Faces A Brutal LSU Warning Ahead Of Playoff Test

Joel Klatt sees a real test coming for Alabama when it lines up against LSU, and his preview centered on the kind of pressure that can wreck a game plan fast. He pointed to LSUs pass rush and defensive play as the biggest problems awaiting the Crimson Tide, especially with Alabama still trying to find more consistency in the running game.

Klatt also leaned into LSUs recent momentum, including strong showings from quarterback Sam Leavitt, while noting injury updates on both sides as part of the buildup. His projection was blunt, with LSU taking control and Alabama left chasing the game, a warning sign the Tide will have to answer if it wants to stay on track for the playoff push. [Read more 🡒]

Alabama Faces One Brutal Matchup That Could Break The Offense

Alabamas place at No. 5 in the College Football Playoff rankings leaves little margin for error, and the next SEC test comes with a familiar kind of danger. LSU arrives ranked 14th with two losses, but the Tigers have built one of the nations most disruptive fronts, sitting second nationally in sacks and bringing multiple pass rushers who can change a game in a hurry.

That is a troubling setup for an Alabama offense that has already had issues keeping its quarterback upright, with the Tide ranking 118th nationally in adjusted sack rate allowed. Add in the offensive lines injury concerns, and pass protection becomes more than a talking point - it may decide whether Alabama can stay on schedule or spend the night fighting off pressure in one of the seasons most important SEC games.
