Alabama Heads Into LSU With One Growing Offensive Concern

Alabama's head coach, Kalen DeBoer, outlines the critical adjustments needed to elevate the Crimson Tide's faltering run game after their narrow win over Texas A&M.

Alabama’s ground game has been showing hints of life this season, but Saturday against Texas A&M was a different story entirely. The Crimson Tide never got the rushing attack going in a 31-20 win, and after the game, Kalen DeBoer didn’t sugarcoat it.

He called the effort “disappointing,” then on Monday in Birmingham laid out the issue in plain terms: the problem wasn’t physical, it was in the details.

“It’s a couple of small execution errors,” DeBoer said. “Some of it just has to do with identification and things like that.

It’s things that I would expect we would be much better at. You can tell when the identification and execution happens.

It’s not a physical thing. We just have to execute at a higher level.”

The numbers backed up the frustration. Alabama finished with just 68 rushing yards against the Aggies and averaged 2.4 yards per carry.

Daniel Hill led the team with 36 yards on nine attempts, and 13 of those came on one run. Even if sack yardage is removed, Alabama still managed only 78 yards on the ground.

DeBoer said the offense had stretches that kept it from finding a full rhythm, especially early.

“There’s some things that disappointed within the first few series that I know we can do better, and the small things add up and keep you from extending drives and putting points on the board,” DeBoer said. “But there’s also a lot of really good plays that the guys made that fed off of things that we’ve done well. Just stacking plays, and you can see in the second half, there was more of that, and it led to scoring drives.”

Alabama spent much of Saturday playing from behind, but it surged late to take control and snap a two-game losing streak after setbacks against Georgia and Tennessee.

For DeBoer, the takeaway going forward is simple: the Tide have to be sharper from the opening whistle.

“It’s more about consistency,” DeBoer said. “You can see guys out there and what it can look like.

We actually just did that today. But we also addressed the areas where we fell short with our execution.

That’s what we need to improve. We got to play four quarters, not just two or three.

Especially early in the game.

“I know our guys are gonna fight. They’re gonna continue to gather the information and get on the sideline and solve the problems or solve the things that maybe are new that people have game-planned. I know that all of that exists, but we just got to be better early on.”

Alabama has a week off before returning to action Nov. 7 at LSU.

Former Alabama Assistant Just Addressed Those Power Four Rumors

Charles Huff has been a familiar name in coaching circles for a while, and his current success at Memphis has naturally put him on the radar as Power Four openings start to circulate. The former Alabama assistant spent time at Marshall and Southern Miss before landing the Tigers job, and his name has recently been floated in connection with Baylor, Maryland and NC State as those programs sort through their next steps.

Huff addressed the chatter in a press conference and made it clear he has not been contacted about any of those vacancies. He also pointed out what usually happens in coaching search season, noting that movement tends to come after the year is over, which keeps the focus on the stretch run for now even as the rumor mill keeps turning. Alabamas Playoff Push Now Rests On These Overlooked Difference-Makers

With Alabama heading into a critical matchup against LSU, the stakes around the final month of the regular season are suddenly hard to miss. The Crimson Tides College Football Playoff hopes could be shaped as much by the players who have been easiest to overlook as by the stars everyone already knows, and that has put a fresh spotlight on the supporting cast around the roster.

Among the names drawing attention are the cornerbacks lined up opposite Zabien Brown, pass rusher Yhonzae Pierre, running back Daniel Hill, offensive lineman Racin Delgatty and quarterback Keelon Russell. Their production, roles and health will matter in different ways as Alabama tries to keep its season on track, and the margin for error only gets smaller from here. [Read more 🡒]

Alabama Heads Into LSU Week With One Encouraging Trend Under DeBoer

After eight straight games, Alabama finally gets a bye week to catch its breath, and the timing could not be much better with injuries piling up and a big LSU showdown looming on the other side. Team captain Ryan Coleman-Williams is trending toward playing in the next game, which gives the Tide at least a little optimism as Kalen DeBoer and his staff try to get a battered roster closer to full strength.

The encouraging part for Alabama is what has happened coming out of bye weeks under DeBoer. The Tide have won all four of those games and done so by comfortable margins, a useful trend to lean on as they head into a matchup that should carry real College Football Playoff weight. LSU, coached by Lane Kiffin, will bring plenty of attention and pressure with it, and Alabama's ability to reset this week could matter as much as anything else in what comes next. [Read more 🡒]
