Oklahoma’s rough start may be opening a door Alabama wants to walk through.
The Sooners entered the year with real momentum after last season’s College Football Playoff run, a Top 10 ranking and a fresh contract for Brent Venables. Four weeks later, the picture looks a lot different.
Oklahoma is 2-2, has dropped out of the Top 25 after getting beaten badly by Georgia, and the offense has been a problem with John Mateer at quarterback. The road ahead doesn’t look much friendlier, either.
After the bye week, five of Oklahoma’s next six opponents are ranked, and that stretch includes No. 1 Texas in the Red River Rivalry on 10/10.
At this point, bowl eligibility itself could be in doubt.
That’s where Alabama comes in.
Kalen DeBoer and the Crimson Tide are in the mix for the state of Oklahoma’s top 2028 recruit, 4-star athlete Kamieon Compton-Nero. Alabama is one of five schools still standing for the Owasso, Oklahoma standout, along with Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Ole Miss and SMU.
Compton-Nero was in Tuscaloosa for the South Carolina game and recently narrowed his list. The announcement came after his visit to Alabama, giving the Crimson Tide a chance to make a strong early impression on one of the top players in the country.
The 6-foot-3, 175-pound athlete plays both ways at Owasso High School. According to the 247 composite rankings, he’s the No. 45 overall player and the No. 1 athlete in the 2028 class. Rivals also has him among the top athletes in the class, with the 2028 ranking showing him as a top-three athlete.
Most projections point to Compton-Nero ending up in the secondary, where his length and range would fit neatly into Kane Wommack’s defense. He has the kind of frame and versatility that can give a staff options, and Alabama is clearly treating him like a priority early.
Pulling elite prospects out of Oklahoma is never simple. The Sooners usually protect their borders well, and higher-ranked players tend to stay home. Alabama has seen that firsthand before, including in the 2027 cycle when 5-star cornerback Gabriel Osborne Jr. originally looked like a Tide lean before choosing Oklahoma.
Still, this situation feels different. If Oklahoma keeps sliding, the pressure on Venables could build quickly despite the extension. That kind of instability can matter in a recruitment this far out, and Alabama is in position to benefit if Compton-Nero starts looking for something steadier.
For now, the Tide have already done the important part: get him on campus and keep themselves in the conversation.

Alabama Fans Wont Love What Wommack Said Before This SEC Test
Alabamas defense has spent the last stretch under a brighter spotlight than it would like, with recent games bringing a fresh round of questions about how much yardage it has been giving up. Before another SEC test, Kane Wommack tried to steady the conversation by saying the unit is still growing, still improving in physicality and effort, and showing the kind of response he expects as the season moves on.
The comments were meant to project confidence, but they also came with a notable nod to what is ahead. Wommack singled out Mississippi State quarterback Kamario Taylor as one of the toughest challengers he has seen in his time, maybe even the best, which only raises the stakes for a defense already trying to quiet outside criticism. For Alabama, the timing makes this feel like more than a routine week of preparation. [Read more 🡒]
Alabama's Improved Run Game May Decide More Than Fans Expected
Heavy rain could end up changing the feel of Alabamas trip to Mississippi State more than the quarterback matchup alone. Keelon Russell and Kamario Taylor will still draw plenty of attention, but the forecast has raised the possibility that the Tide will need to lean on a run game that has taken a clear step forward from last season.
Daniel Hill, EJ Crowell and Traeshawn Brown have given Alabama more options between the tackles and on the edges, which matters even more if the weather turns the game into a grind. If the passing game has to shrink because of the conditions, the ground attack may become the part of Alabamas offense that decides how comfortably it can control the night. [Read more 🡒]
Jalen Hurts Is Facing Another Eagles Backlash Alabama Fans Will Notice
Jalen Hurts has spent enough time in Philadelphia to know how quickly the temperature can rise when the Eagles stumble, and this latest wave of criticism is the kind Alabama fans will recognize as familiar territory. The former Crimson Tide quarterback has been under heavier scrutiny after an uneven 2025 season, with his play again becoming a central topic after a rough showing against the Chicago Bears.
The Bears game added another layer to the noise when Hurts was evaluated for a concussion after taking an illegal hit, and his reaction to a teammates apology for a turnover also drew attention he did not need. Eagles frustration has a way of building on old storylines, too, and Hurts strained relationship with former teammate A.J. Brown, which eventually helped lead to Browns trade, is part of why every new wrinkle around the quarterback tends to land so loudly. [Read more 🡒]
