Alabama Gets An Early SEC Test With Something To Prove

Get ready for an intriguing preseason showdown as Alabama takes on Ole Miss, showcasing potential future stars and varied coaching strategies in this high-stakes exhibition.

Alabama’s second preseason tune-up arrives Thursday night in Birmingham, where the Crimson Tide will face Ole Miss at Boutwell Auditorium in a scrimmage that gives both teams another early look before the 2026-27 season.

The exhibition follows Alabama’s 111-93 win over Furman on Oct. 8, a game that offered an early glimpse of the roster Nate Oats has been building. Oats said Tuesday at SEC Tipoff ’27 that the Furman game gave his team a chance to evaluate its younger players, and he expects a different kind of test against the Rebels.

"We got a good look at our young guys against Furman. We'll get a great look at our guys in a tougher game against Ole Miss," Alabama head coach Nate Oats said at SEC Tipoff '27 on Tuesday.

"Definitely different styles. Talk to Coach Beard.

He has been great. One of the best coaches in the country.

This whole conference has some of the best coaches in the country and across all the programs."

For Alabama, the opener against Furman featured a big frontcourt presence and plenty of flashes from the newcomers. Kentucky transfer forward Brandon Garrison scored 13 points in the first half and didn’t miss a shot, going 6 of 6 from the field.

Amari Allen, who withdrew from the 2026 NBA Draft after a standout freshman season, led the way with 19 points, five rebounds, six assists and a steal. Three first-year players also showed promise on both ends at Coleman Coliseum.

Ole Miss has not played another team yet this preseason, but its last meaningful run came in the 2025-26 campaign. The Rebels finished 15-20 overall and 4-14 in SEC play, then made noise in the conference tournament as the 15-seed. They knocked off Texas, Georgia and Alabama before losing to Arkansas 93-90 in the semifinals.

That SEC Tournament meeting still lingers in the matchup history. Alabama had the 2-seed and a double-bye, while Ole Miss survived back-to-back wins over Texas and Georgia before the upset over the Crimson Tide. Alabama fell 80-79 on March 13 after digging itself into an early hole and never getting all the way back into the game.

The all-time series tilts heavily toward Alabama, which leads 126-60 since the first meeting on Feb. 13, 1921.

Even with the game in Birmingham, it will count as a neutral-site contest, and Alabama is 8-3 in neutral settings against Ole Miss. The result won’t affect either team’s record for the 2026-27 season.

SEC Network will carry the game with Dave Neal on play-by-play and Jimmy Dykes as analyst. The Crimson Tide Sports Network will also have radio coverage, with Chris Stewart and Bryan Passink on the call, and the pregame show begins one hour before tipoff.

Alabama Sent A Strong Message After That Ugly Georgia Incident

The aftermath of Alabamas game with Georgia turned ugly for reasons that had nothing to do with the scoreboard. A video circulating after the contest showed an Alabama fan slapping Georgia linebacker Raylen Wilson across the helmet, a moment that quickly drew attention for all the wrong reasons and put the program in the spotlight beyond the field.

Alabama athletics moved fast once the individual was identified, handing down a lifetime ban from future Alabama sporting events. The school also publicly addressed the incident, making clear that conduct like that will not be tolerated, a message meant as much for the fan base as anyone else watching what has become an increasingly scrutinized sideline and stadium atmosphere. Alabama Is Testing How Real Its Auburn Flip Push Really Is

Alabamas 2027 class is already taking shape with 15 commitments, and the current ranking sits 34th nationally as the staff leans into a smaller haul after back-to-back large classes. The Tide still have work to do up front, though, especially on the defensive line, where theyre continuing to circle a couple of targets who could change the look of the group before the cycle settles in.

One of the more interesting names is Auburn commit MJ Evans, whose scheduled visit to Tuscaloosa on Oct. 24 will offer a real gauge of how serious Alabamas push has become. The Tide are also involved with former Memphis commit Joshua Lane, who has visits lined up for Alabama and Tennessee, giving this next stretch a chance to shape whether the class stays compact or gets a late boost from a few key additions. Sabans Coaching Influence Just Showed Up In An Unlikely Alabama Story

Ryder Burtons latest moment in the spotlight came in a place Alabama fans dont always expect to be looking, with UABs quarterback helping guide the Blazers to a 30-17 overtime win against East Carolina. Burtons night included a 97-yard touchdown drive to force overtime, but it was his postgame comments and the little details around the game that linked the story back to Tuscaloosa in an unexpected way.

Burton also drew attention for wearing a backwards baseball cap during the overtime coin toss after helmet equipment issues, a quirky scene that stood out in a tense finish. Afterward, he talked about coach Alex Mortensen and mentioned watching a documentary tied to Mortensens former coach, Nick Saban, a reminder that Sabans coaching tree still shows up in odd, easy-to-miss places around the state.
