Saturday night in Tuscaloosa sets up as one of those college football nights where the quarterbacks may end up deciding everything. Alabama and Georgia both come in looking fairly rated, both with healthy signal-callers, and that puts the spotlight squarely on Keelon Russell and Gunner Stockton.
Stockton has already shown he can handle Alabama. In last December’s SEC Championship Game, he wasn’t asked to pile up gaudy numbers, but he still delivered like a winner.
He completed 76.9% of his passes, threw for 156 yards on 26 attempts, added 39 rushing yards and found the end zone three times through the air. That performance earned him SEC Championship Game MVP honors.
This season, Stockton has been better in four of Georgia’s five games. The one hiccup came against a strong Oklahoma defense.
Even so, his Georgia résumé already includes big moments, including two wins over Texas. He also helped lead the Bulldogs to an overtime victory in Knoxville last season.
He doesn’t always play the flashy game, but he does the kind of work that keeps Georgia steady. He’s a proven leader for a team that prides itself on not beating itself.
That’s what makes this matchup feel like sizzle versus substance. Russell brings the sizzle.
Stockton brings the substance. Usually, substance wins out.
But that may not be the case this time. Russell’s flash comes with a purpose, and that purpose is winning.
There’s also another wrinkle hanging over Tuscaloosa: weather. Fans inside Bryant-Denny could be dealing with two storms Saturday night, one tied to the lingering effects of a hurricane and the other tied to the possibility of an offensive eruption from Russell.
Alabama and Georgia should be able to handle the real storm. The question is whether Georgia can handle Russell.
The scoring threshold may tell the story. If the winner needs 31 points or more, Alabama has the edge with Russell. If 24 is enough, Georgia probably does.

Alabama Georgia Showdown Just Got Another Twist Fans Will Notice
ESPNs College GameDay is headed to Alabama for the upcoming Georgia-Alabama matchup, adding another layer to a game that already had the feel of a major early-season measuring stick. The setting only raises the stakes for a meeting that will have plenty of national attention, and now a familiar name from Alabamas recent past is joining the pregame spotlight.
Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young, the former Crimson Tide Heisman winner, said he will serve as the celebrity picker on the show, giving Alabama fans one more reason to tune in before kickoff. The game also carries a weather watch, with Hurricane Isaias potentially threatening the schedule or creating difficult conditions, while Georgia will be without Chauncy Bowen and Alabama will lean on Daniel Hill, who leads the team in rushing yards. Herbstreit Sees A Different Alabama Team Ahead Of Georgia Showdown
Kalen DeBoers first Alabama team has already given observers enough reason to believe the program is starting to look different from the one Nick Saban left behind. Kirk Herbstreit recently pointed to a group that appears healthier, more balanced and more comfortable in its own skin, noting how the Tide have opened the 2026 season 5-0 while building toward a marquee matchup with Georgia.
Herbstreit also framed the early progress as more than just a hot start, crediting DeBoer for sticking with his own coaching identity even with the pressure that comes with the job. The bigger question now is whether Alabamas improved health and steadier play in the trenches can hold up when the competition level jumps again, because Georgia will offer a far stiffer test than anything the Tide have faced so far. Alabama-Georgia Weekend Just Got A Weather Twist Fans Didn't Expect
The buildup to Alabama-Georgia picked up an unexpected wrinkle with Isaias approaching, forcing ESPNs College GameDay to change plans for Saturday morning. Instead of setting up outdoors for its usual pregame scene, the show will shift inside Coleman Coliseum, a rare move that changes the feel of one of the sports biggest weekly stages.
Even with the weather complication, officials still expect the game itself to go on as scheduled at Bryant-Denny Stadium with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. The matchup already carried plenty of weight with both teams undefeated after strong recent performances, and now the only real uncertainty is how much the storm will alter the day around it.
