Alabama Freshmen Are Forcing A Tough Secondary Question

Alabama's Xavier Griffin, a standout freshman linebacker, receives high praise as he makes waves ahead of the season.

There’s already plenty of preseason chatter around Alabama freshman linebacker Xavier Griffin, and for good reason. The Tide landed a rare prospect in the 2026 class, with 247Sports ranking Griffin as the No. 1 linebacker. At 6-foot-3 and 200 pounds, he already carries the look of a player who belongs on a college field.

But Griffin isn’t the only young defender drawing attention in fall camp.

Defensive coordinator Kane Wommack also singled out freshman defensive back Jireh Edwards earlier this week, and he didn’t hold back on the praise. “Jireh’s one of the most instinctive playmakers I’ve ever seen coming out of high school,” Wommack said, via Roll 'Bama Roll.

“Very physical. He’s got phenomenal tracking of the ball.

His blitz IQ and awareness is really high, and so he can create production out of that package as well. Really, for him, it’s about putting the whole thing together.”

That kind of endorsement hints at a real path to impact for Edwards at safety in 2026.

Griffin, meanwhile, brings his own impressive résumé. He’s listed at 6-foot-2 and 218 pounds, and he arrives after a standout high school career at Gainesville High School in Gainesville, Georgia.

As a senior, he piled up 78 tackles, including 12.0 tackles for loss, along with four sacks. He also earned all-region honors in basketball, underscoring the athleticism that made him such a coveted recruit.

His recruiting profile backed that up, too. Griffin was rated a five-star prospect and the No. 2 safety in the 2026 class.

Even with the buzz around Griffin, Alabama’s safety picture still points to Bray Hubbard and Keon Sabb as the veterans at the center of the room. Hubbard is coming off a second-team All-American season, while Sabb enters his fifth year.

Alabama's Quarterback Battle Comes With One Early Concern

Alabama is moving toward a quarterback decision, but the process is being handled carefully as coaches weigh Austin Mack and Keelon Russell ahead of the 2026 season. The staff has spent camp sorting through the competition while also keeping an eye on other key spots, including defensive coordinator Kane Wommacks evaluation of the inside linebacker group as the Tide get closer to opening the year.

What makes the quarterback race notable is the lack of experience on both sides of it, especially when compared with the rest of the SEC. That inexperience is a big reason Alabama is taking its time, and the final call is expected to come after the last fall camp scrimmage, when the staff has one more chance to see how each passer handles live work before settling the depth chart. Alabama Has A New Contender In Its Wide Receiver Battle

Alabamas receiver competition has started to take clearer shape, with Ryan Coleman-Williams and Lotzeir Brooks already locked in as two of the three starters. The open spot exists because NC State transfer Noah Rogers has been sidelined by injury, and that has created an opening for the rest of the room to make a move as fall work continues.

Derek Meadows has been one of the biggest beneficiaries so far, earning more snaps in recent scrimmages and drawing praise from coaches and teammates for the way he has handled the extra reps. Rico Scott has also flashed in practice, giving Alabama another option to sort through as the staff tries to settle on who can claim that third role. [Read more 🡒]

Alabamas Kicking Battle Is Becoming A Real Fall Camp Concern

The kicking competition in fall camp has become one of the more watched subplots around Alabama, and Kalen DeBoer has made clear it is still very much open. Conor Talty, who entered camp as the 2025 starter, is working alongside transfer Lorcan Quinn, and both have been getting rotating reps as the staff evaluates the position.

Quinn arrived from Marshall with enough attention to land on the preseason Lou Groza Award watch list, which only adds to the intrigue around a job that can swing games in tight spots. For now, DeBoer is framing the battle as a positive one, but Alabama still has not officially named its starter, leaving one of camps most important decisions hanging in the balance. [Read more 🡒]
