Alabama Football Stuns Fans With Bold Move in Spring Practice Week

Alabama football's spring practice reveals key position battles and promising newcomers set to impact the upcoming season.

Alabama football wrapped up a week of spring practice, and there's plenty to unpack as the Crimson Tide gears up for an exciting season ahead. Here’s a breakdown of what we’ve learned so far:

Jackson Lloyd Locks Down Left Tackle

In a move that surprised some, Ryan Grubb has named Jackson Lloyd as Alabama’s starting left tackle. Stepping into the shoes of Kadyn Proctor, who held the position for three years, Lloyd has emerged as the clear choice. Many expected a fierce competition for the spot, but Grubb’s announcement puts Lloyd firmly in the driver’s seat.

Quarterback Battle: No Clear Leader Yet

The race for the starting quarterback position between Austin Mack and Keelon Russell remains neck and neck. Both have shown promise, but neither has pulled ahead.

“They’re doing really good,” Grubb noted. “First two practices were awesome. Today, there was a little bit of a regression with a heavier install, but they’re both competitive and have the right spirit.”

Transfers Poised to Make an Impact

Several transfers are already turning heads. Racin Delgatty at center received praise, while Josh Ford is stepping up as a leader among tight ends.

On defense, Kane Wommack highlighted Devan Thompkins, Desmond Umeozulu, Caleb Woodson, and Carmelo O’Neal as key additions. Thompkins, in particular, has shown versatility, able to play both inside and out.

Newcomers’ Positions Clarified

There was some uncertainty about where newcomers would fit, but clarity is emerging. Umeozulu will play a hybrid role between bandit and wolf, while Thompkins is set for the three-tech/defensive tackle position.

Jireh Edwards will start as a true safety, and Xavier Griffin transitions to off-the-ball linebacker. Jamarion Matthews makes a surprise move to wolf linebacker, shifting from his defensive line roots.

Running Backs Ready to Shine

Alabama’s running backs are gearing up for a standout season. Daniel Hill has shed weight, enhancing his agility, while Kevin Riley has bulked up without losing explosiveness. AK Dear and EJ Crowell also show promise, rounding out a formidable group.

“Daniel looks great, hovering in the low 230s, and Kevin’s got another step for him right now,” Grubb said. “The competition in the room has really elevated everyone.”

With spring practice underway, Alabama is setting the stage for what promises to be an intriguing season, full of potential and excitement. Stay tuned as the team continues to evolve and prepare for the challenges ahead.
