Alabama football is ushering in a new era, and Caleb Woodson is at the heart of it. This isn't just about filling a spot at inside linebacker; it's about leadership and setting the tone for a young Crimson Tide defense.
With the departure of key players like Deontae Lawson, Nikhai Hill-Green, and Justin Jefferson, Alabama's linebacker room is experiencing a youth movement. The groundwork was laid with the 2025 recruiting class, featuring talents like Luke Metz, Duke Johnson II, and Abduall Sanders Jr. Now, alongside QB Reese and Cayden Jones, the future is bright for Alabama's defense.
Enter Caleb Woodson. He's not just here to add depth or experience; he's here to lead. Head coach Kalen DeBoer emphasized Woodson's role as a captain-type figure after the team's second spring practice on March 10.
Woodson's track record speaks volumes. Over 35 games with the Hokies, he's logged more than 1,200 snaps, racking up 152 tackles, 11.5 tackles-for-loss, and two sacks. Standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing 238 pounds, he immediately becomes the most seasoned player in the Crimson Tide's linebacker room, with Cayden Jones next in line with 83 career snaps.
Defensive coordinator Kane Wommack sees Woodson as a "professional" and "business-like" player who is committed to being a great teammate and leader. In just four practices, Woodson is already setting the standard.
"We're really focusing on effort and finish," Wommack said after the fourth spring practice on March 13. "Our defense plays hard, but we want to elevate it to an elite level.
When you watch a nationally-televised game, our effort and finish should stand out. Caleb is setting the tone for that right now."
Woodson isn't disrupting Alabama's path; he's enhancing it. He's a crucial part of a unit that's learning and growing together. With one season left, Wommack notices something special in Woodson: a hunger to excel.
Alabama will wrap up its 2026 spring practice with A-Day on Saturday, April 11, kicking off at 1 p.m. CT. The stage is set for Woodson and the new generation of Crimson Tide linebackers to shine.
