Alabama’s trip to Kentucky is already drawing attention at the betting window, and the opening line suggests oddsmakers aren’t exactly giving the Crimson Tide a free pass on the road.
FanDuel opened Alabama as a 10.5-point favorite with the total set at 48.5, and that number feels light enough to raise an eyebrow. Kentucky is clearly a step up from East Carolina, and the game being played away from home matters too. Still, the early line makes this one look like a spot where Alabama could have the edge by more than the market is suggesting.
Kentucky comes in off a clean-looking 45-13 win over FCS Youngstown State. The Wildcats were sharp right away, scoring touchdowns on five of their first six possessions and rolling to the easy cover against the -21.5 spread.
They also went under the 61.5 total, which was a huge number to begin with. Kenny Minchey handled the whole game at quarterback and finished 18 of 27 for 301 yards, four touchdowns and no turnovers.
It was a strong outing, but the Crimson Tide defense is a different level of problem than Youngstown State presented.
Alabama, meanwhile, handled East Carolina 48-10 in a game where the final spread before kickoff was Bama -27.5 with an Over/Under of 52.5. The Tide covered and the game went over.
Defensively, Alabama was controlling. At quarterback, Keelon Russell flashed some real upside, even if he still has some basics to clean up - things like sliding and knowing when to throw the ball away.
Once those details start clicking, the ceiling gets a lot higher. Lexington is another good test in that process.
The market’s 48.5 total points points toward a score in the neighborhood of something like Alabama 30-19 or 29-19. The question is whether this really plays like a two-score game.
The usual rough rule of thumb gives the home team three points, but even with that built in, the number still feels modest. There’s also the possibility that Las Vegas is inviting overconfidence from Kentucky backers.
For the casual bettor, the final score against East Carolina might make Alabama’s last result look a little closer than it really was. If not for a busted coverage and a mishandled exchange between Russell and Ryan Williams, that game could have been even more lopsided.
