Nick Saban says there was plenty going on around Alabama that he never saw coming - including the fact that the program had been quietly saving video of team meetings, locker-room moments and other behind-the-scenes scenes for years.
That footage is part of “Saban,” a six-part documentary centered on the former Alabama coach, and some of the most intriguing material involves the 2017-18 national championship game. Saban said the film includes the moment he told Tua Tagovailoa he would replace Jalen Hurts at halftime, a decision that helped set up Alabama’s overtime win over Georgia on the infamous second-and-26 play.
“When I told Tua that he was going in at halftime for Jalen, I didn’t know any of that (footage) existed,” Saban told Rich Eisen. “So to see all of that inside out sort of stuff that happens behind the scenes, I thought would be very, very interesting for fans in terms of the competitive nature of sports.”
Saban said the documentary is built from interviews with 70 people and is designed to show more than the polished version of his career. He added that Alabama never informed him it was recording inside the locker room and in team meetings.
“I would never let the media in the locker room after the game,” Saban said. “I thought there was a time when they coach-team relationship was very important.
“What you said to the team was not for public information. Well, Alabama was doing an archive on all those things. I never knew that stuff existed.”

The series premieres Oct. 8 at 5 p.m. Central, 6 p.m.
ET and 3 p.m. PT, with later episodes rolling out through October and into November on ESPN.
The documentary traces Saban from his early life in West Virginia and his time at Kent State University through his rise from low-level assistant to head coach and then into the dominant Alabama run that brought six national championships in 17 seasons before he retired in early 2024. Saban and his wife, Terry, are both featured heavily, along with more than 70 friends, coaching colleagues and former players including Bill Belichick, Lane Kiffin, Steve Sarkisian, Kirby Smart, Jalen Hurts, Derrick Henry, Bryce Young, Julio Jones, AJ McCarron, DeVonta Smith and Tagovailoa.
“With my coaching days behind me, Miss Terry and I have been doing a lot of reflection and realized we were ready to tell our story,” Saban said last month. “The team at Words + Pictures has encouraged me to really look back not just at my time at Alabama, but every stop along the way - and not just reflect on what happened but consider the process which made it happen.
I interacted with a lot of players and coaches along the way and I’m happy to see that so many of them have contributed to this docuseries. There’s a lot to tell, and I’m excited to share it all.”
ESPN says the project will include never-before-aired footage from practices, sidelines, locker rooms and other behind-the-scenes moments. Brian Lockhart, ESPN’s senior vice president of original content, said the access around Saban and his inner circle gives the series its edge.

Alabama Heads Into Mississippi State With New Depth Concerns
Alabamas injury picture is starting to crowd the conversation heading into its trip to Mississippi State, with two more players added to a list the Crimson Tide has had to manage carefully. Will Sanders and Jayvin James both came out of the South Carolina game hurt, and while Sanders is expected to be available, James is now sitting in the questionable bucket as the Tide tries to sort out who will be ready to go.
The bigger concern may be the ripple effect on the middle of the defense. Linebackers Justin Hill and Desmond Umeozulu are already out, which leaves Alabama thinner than it would like at a spot that can be tested quickly in conference play. Alabama Heads Into Mississippi State With One Lingering Injury Concern
Alabama is getting closer to its trip to Mississippi State with a clearer picture of the injury situation along both lines, though not every answer is in yet. Kalen DeBoer said offensive lineman Jayvin James is questionable, while William Sanders is expected to be ready, which at least gives the Tide some needed depth as they head into another SEC road test.
The bigger concern may still be on the defensive side, where outside linebacker Justin Hill and defensive end Desmond Umeozulu are both out, and Umeozulu is expected to need more time.
