Kalen DeBoer’s Alabama staff is still fighting to reshape its 2027 class, but one recruiting storyline doesn’t hold up: the idea that he can’t land five-stars.
That claim has been floating around as Alabama works through a 2027 group that currently sits 50th nationally on 247Sports. It got more oxygen when Kyle Henderson, host of Bama Football on YouTube, framed the Monshun Sales recruitment as a major test for DeBoer and the program.
“I think that the Monshun Sales situation is one of Alabama's biggest recruiting tests, Henderson said. "I think it'll tell us a couple different things.

Can Alabama beat Texas? Can Alabama beat Indiana, LSU?
I think that right now, the perception is that Alabama can't afford a prospect like this. I think there's also a perception that a prospect like this no longer wants to come to Alabama because Alabama isn't Alabama."
But that narrative got pushed back quickly by Brett Greenberg of 247Sports, who pointed to Alabama’s recent track record with elite talent.
"'Can Kalen DeBoer close on an elite five-star?' I'd say yes, considering Alabama was [tied for first] for most among the country (three) in 2026, while also signing three in 2025, and having five-star quarterback Elijah Haven in the fold for 2027," Greenberg tweeted. "Beat out [Texas] A&M, Oregon, Miami, and others for many of those, too."
Greenberg’s point is backed up by Alabama’s 2026 haul. The Crimson Tide landed three five-stars in that class: edge rusher Xavier Griffin from Gainesville, Georgia, running back EJ Crowell from Jackson, Alabama, and cornerback Jorden Edmonds from Marietta, Georgia. All three were top-20 prospects in the last recruiting cycle.
That’s why the “DeBoer can’t land five-stars” line doesn’t really survive contact with the facts. There may be questions about Alabama’s NIL approach, but the program has still shown it can close on elite recruits.
Sales remains the name most tied to the current conversation. The five-star wide receiver from Indianapolis has drawn heavy attention, and while Alabama may have been in front for him at one point, Indiana has stayed in the mix throughout. Ohio State and Texas have also made strong pushes.
Even so, Alabama shouldn’t be written off. Sales grew up rooting for the Crimson Tide, and that connection still matters. At the same time, money is a real factor in this recruitment, and he’s expected to command plenty of it.
For DeBoer, the bigger point is simpler: he has to keep landing the kind of players who want to be at Alabama. He has a strong history of developing receivers, and Sales would be a valuable addition. But the engine here is quarterback play.
As long as Elijah Haven stays locked in to his 2027 commitment, Alabama should be in good shape. If Haven lives up to the billing, other blue-chip prospects will want to join him. DeBoer’s strength as a head coach has been putting his quarterback in position to succeed, and that’s part of why Haven and Trent Seaborn are not backing down.
The challenge now is getting both Haven and Sales on campus first.
