Arguably the wildest stretch of the college football calendar is here, and Week 10 brings the kind of slate that can shake up the SEC and the playoff picture in a hurry. There are seven top-25 matchups on deck, and four of them come from the SEC alone. With eight SEC teams sitting on one or two losses and all of them facing another team in that same range this week, Saturday is shaping up as a true separator.
The ripple effect is obvious. This weekend should go a long way toward sorting out the College Football Playoff field in a month, and it could also matter for the potentially final SEC Championship Game. With that kind of pressure hanging over the schedule, here’s how some of the biggest games stack up.
Utah and BYU get the day started in a Holy War that has drawn plenty of attention for the 10 a.m. local kickoff, but the stakes are much bigger than the start time. The matchup matters in both the Big 12 race and the CFP race, and it features two of the most entertaining dual-threat quarterbacks around in Bear Bachmeier and Devon Dampier. The pick here goes to BYU, with the possible return of star running back LJ Martin tipping the balance.
Missouri’s trip to Texas carries a different kind of pressure. The Tigers got star running back Ahmad Hardy back last week, which is one of the most encouraging developments in the country, and his presence alongside Jamal Roberts gives Missouri more punch.
Still, the Tigers have shown cracks in their losses to Mississippi State and Ole Miss, allowing 360 passing yards to Kamario Taylor and then 257 rushing yards to Ole Miss. That opens the door for Texas’ uneven offense to come through.
Prediction: Texas 28, Missouri 17.
Minnesota nearly pulled off a huge upset last week before falling in overtime to Indiana, a game that ended with both teams trading 60-yard field goals in the final minute of regulation. The Golden Gophers get another shot at an upset here against unbeaten UCLA, but the Bruins’ defense has been on another level lately. Over the last five games, UCLA has held opponents to seven points per game, and that defense should be enough to keep the Bruins perfect.
LSU and Alabama is the kind of game that can go either way, and this one has been tough to call. The game is in Tiger Stadium, though not under the lights, and LSU’s defensive numbers look strong.
Even so, the Tigers have only faced one truly elite offense, and that game ended in a 32-point loss to Ole Miss. The lean is LSU, but only barely.
Both offenses should have room to work, and this one feels extremely tight.
Ohio State and Oregon meet in a battle of backup quarterbacks, but the edge goes to the Buckeyes because of Jeremiah Smith and a defense that ranks among the nation’s best. It’s a must-win for both teams in the CFP race, and for Ohio State, this is also about figuring out life without Julian Sayin after last week’s loss without him. The Buckeyes get the nod.
Tennessee and Kentucky bring plenty of intrigue of their own. Kentucky is one of only two SEC teams with one loss, yet there’s still hesitation around placing the Wildcats in the conference’s top tier.
Tennessee, meanwhile, is the fourth-highest ranked two-loss SEC team in the CFP rankings and sits eight spots behind Alabama, even though the Volunteers beat the Crimson Tide by 16. Both teams have plenty riding on this one, but Tennessee gets the edge behind DeSean Bishop.
Miami’s meeting with Notre Dame has taken a hit on the injury front, with star receiver and Heisman Trophy candidate Malachi Toney reportedly set to be out for a while, according to On3’s Pete Nakos. Even so, the Hurricanes still have another Heisman candidate in quarterback Darian Mensah, and they also bring what may be their toughest test of the season. Notre Dame needs this one badly after landing at No. 11 in the initial CFP rankings, but Miami’s firepower is enough to carry the day even without Toney.
Ole Miss and Georgia closes the list with a game that carries real pressure for both sides. Kirby Smart has a losing record against just three schools, and Ole Miss is one of them.
He is also 0-3 against the Rebels away from Athens and 0-2 in Oxford. Trinidad Chambliss played well against Georgia last season, and with Ole Miss’ CFP hopes potentially hanging in the balance and star running back Kewan Lacy out, the spotlight is squarely on him.
Georgia will need the Gunner Stockton who showed up against Alabama, not the version that appeared against Auburn and Florida.

Lane Kiffins Alabama Problem Just Got Bigger In The Playoff
Lane Kiffins history against Alabama has become part of the backdrop every time he lines up across from the Crimson Tide, and it is impossible to ignore again with LSU set for a playoff matchup against No. 5 Alabama. As a head coach, Kiffin is 0-5 against Alabama, a run that has followed him through stops at different programs and kept this rivalry from ever feeling routine when his name is on the opposite sideline.
Now the stakes are even higher, with No. 14 LSU entering as the favorite and the result carrying real weight for both Kiffin and Alabamas coaching staff. For Kiffin, it is another chance to change a storyline that has followed him for years. For Alabama, it is the kind of game that can sharpen the scrutiny on every decision if the Tide do not handle business in the playoff setting. [Read more 🡒]
Saban Sees One Alabama Problem That Could Decide LSU Trip
Nick Saban knows exactly what tends to decide trips to Baton Rouge, and he pointed to the same place Alabama has been vulnerable lately: the quarterback position. As the Crimson Tide get ready for LSU, Saban focused on Keelon Russells recent issues with turnovers and sacks, while also noting that Alabamas outlook improves with the return of key injured players and a steadier overall lineup.
The challenge now is less about talent than about how Alabama handles the noise and pressure inside Tiger Stadium. Saban stressed the need for mental toughness, maturity and consistency against an LSU defense that can make every mistake feel bigger, and the Tide will have to resist the kind of risky plays that can quickly tilt a road game in the wrong direction. Lane Kiffin Is Already Stirring Drama Before Alabama's LSU Test
Lane Kiffin is already adding a little edge to Alabamas trip to Baton Rouge, and not just because LSU is waiting on the other sideline. With the Crimson Tide and Tigers set for a late-afternoon kickoff, Kiffin suggested the SEC put the game in daylight to blunt the usual punch of Tiger Stadium, where LSU tends to feed off its night-game atmosphere.
He also made clear the size of the challenge Alabama presents, calling the Crimson Tide the most talented team LSU has seen this season. So even before the first snap, the stage is set for a test that carries the usual SEC weight and a little extra noise, with kickoff slated for 12:30 p.m. PT/3:30 p.m. ET. [Read more 🡒]
