Alabama Faces A Season-Defining Test At LSU With CFP Pressure Rising

Experts weigh in on the crucial showdown between Alabama and LSU, with injuries and away-game performances potentially tipping the scales.

Saturday’s trip to Baton Rouge brings Alabama into one of the most demanding settings in college football, and the Roll Tide Wire staff isn’t seeing a clean path through it.

The Crimson Tide and LSU meet with both teams sitting at 6-2 and carrying two conference losses apiece. Alabama is No. 5 in the first College Football Playoff rankings, while LSU checks in at No. 14, giving this SEC rivalry game real weight for both sides.

With each team already holding two defeats, there’s a strong case that this one carries must-win pressure, even if a third loss wouldn’t completely end anyone’s postseason hopes. It would, however, leave the loser in a far less comfortable spot heading into Week 11.

There’s also recent history on Alabama’s side. The Tide have won the last three meetings since 2023, but the staff predictions lean toward a tight, tense night in Tiger Stadium rather than another comfortable finish.

Matt Melton sees Alabama falling just short in a game decided late, with LSU pulling out a 33-31 win. He said he has “honestly gone back-and-forth on the outcome of this game for two weeks now,” and pointed to Alabama’s last road outing in a similar atmosphere as a concern.

He expects LSU’s pass rush to create problems, though he also thinks Alabama will improve in some of the same areas that hurt it before. Melton also referenced Kalen DeBoer’s past teams surprising people in tough spots, including the 42-13 win in Baton Rouge two years ago, but ultimately landed on LSU because of the Tigers’ strength and Alabama’s injury uncertainty.

Steve Holley is even more decisive in favor of LSU, predicting a 35-24 Tigers win. He framed the matchup around which version of Kalen DeBoer’s Alabama shows up on the road.

If it’s the team that handled Baton Rouge two years ago, or even the second-half version from the Kentucky road trip, Alabama can hang around. If it looks more like the group that struggled in Knoxville three weeks earlier, he believes the Tide are in trouble.

Holley also pointed to Alabama’s lingering injury issues and LSU’s momentum, noting that the Tigers’ two losses came on the final play.

Elliot Reeder has the closest call of the three, but still gives LSU the edge, 34-31. He called the game “basically a toss-up,” citing Alabama’s health questions and LSU’s own uncertainty around Whit Weeks, who is doubtful.

Reeder also noted that Tiger Stadium will not have its usual night-game edge in this one. He expects both offenses to move the ball, said Alabama could force a turnover or two from Sam Leavitt, and still believes LSU’s offense and pass rush will be enough to land the bigger win.

Alabama Fans Should Be Watching This Spain Park WR Closely

AL.coms latest Best in Bama rankings put a spotlight on the quarterback-receiver combinations driving some of Alabama high school footballs most intriguing offenses, and the list naturally has Crimson Tide fans looking beyond the usual powerhouses. Thompson and Selma grabbed the top billing, with Alabama commit Trent Seaborn pairing with uncommitted Dedrick Kimbrough for Thompson and freshman quarterback Cole Moody throwing to Alabama commit Cedrick Simmons at Selma.

Spain Park also made the cut, thanks to Barrett Price and quarterback Nash Davis, a tandem that has become worth tracking for more than just local bragging rights. Price has been actively recruiting and already has offers from multiple colleges, which makes his profile especially interesting for Alabama fans keeping tabs on in-state pass catchers and the next wave of offensive talent. Lane Kiffins Alabama Problem Just Got Bigger In The Playoff

Lane Kiffins history against Alabama has been one of the more stubborn subplots of his head-coaching career, and it gets another layer now with a playoff game looming between No. 5 Alabama and No. 14 LSU. Kiffin has gone 0-5 against the Crimson Tide as a head coach, a run that has followed him through different stops and different stakes, and it has made Alabama a particularly frustrating matchup whenever his teams have crossed paths with the Tide.

Now the setting is even bigger, with LSU favored and the result carrying real weight for both sides of the coaching tree. For Alabamas staff, it is another high-pressure test against a familiar opponent with a familiar face on the other sideline. For Kiffin, it is another chance to finally change a storyline that has followed him for years, and one that would only grow louder if this one goes the wrong way. [Read more 🡒]

Alabama Faces A Brutal Road Test That Could Decide Everything

A trip to Baton Rouge in Week 10 already carries enough weight, but this one arrives with even more on the line because Alabama and LSU both enter with two losses. The matchup has the feel of a separator game, the kind that can reshape the rest of the season in a hurry, and the Tide will need cleaner football than they have shown at times if they want to leave with control of their own path.

Keelon Russell sits at the center of Alabamas hopes, while LSU brings a pass rush that can force a quarterback into hurried decisions and ugly mistakes. Add in the Tides issues with penalties and injuries, and the margin for error gets thin fast, especially against a rival that has made a habit of turning high-stakes games into pressure cookers.
