ESPN’s “College GameDay” brought the spotlight to Oxford on Saturday, and the show’s picks had plenty of personality to match the stage. With Ole Miss hosting LSU in the week’s marquee matchup, the crew welcomed Academy Award-winning actor and Ole Miss fan Morgan Freeman to the desk and leaned into the energy around the Rebels-Tigers showdown.
Desmond Howard pointed to the numbers and the home edge. “The home team has won 12 of the last 14, including six straight,” Howard said.
“Trinidad’s number is 6. On the desk with the great Morgan Freeman.
Hotty Toddy, y’all.”
Nick Saban, though, went against the grain and surprised Freeman with his call. “I think Trinidad Chambliss is the most dynamic player in college football,” the former Alabama coach said.
“I think (Kewan) Lacey is the best running back in football. I love (Ole Miss coach) Pete Golding as a defensive coach, and I think he’ll have them ready, but defense travels.
LSU has the better defense, so I’m taking LSU.
Freeman answered with a line that fit the moment perfectly. “If I go for what’s his name (Kiffin), I will not be able to go home tonight,” the actor said.
“That’s a fact. In spite in my belief in your every thought (Saban), Ole Miss!
Pat McAfee brought the loudest pitch for the Rebels. “That week I was down in Baton Rouge, Morgan, and, as God as my witness here, that LSU team looked fast,” he said.
“That LSU team look talented. The LSU fan base looked committed.
I actually said last week, I think LSU wins the national championship by 50 points.
“What could ole little Pete Golding and little ole Ole Miss do against a team that I’ve been talking about like that? Well, you step foot in this incredibly hot state, you feel the energy from these fine folks. You can tell hate can certainly motivate and it does feel like if that stadium is upside down, anything can happen.
“So, I guess the question I have to ask Morgan Freeman is, ARE YOU READY?
“Give me Ole Miss to beat Lane Kiffin. As the football gods, and actually god say, there’s some football justice in this world. ... Give me Ole Miss to get a huge win on this day.”
The crew also weighed in on Florida State-Alabama, and the panel was unanimous. Howard said, “I think (Mike Norvell’s) team is coming out and playing insipred, but ultimately, Alabama will win this game.”
Saban praised the Tide’s defense and Keelon Russell, saying, “I think Alabama’s defense is outstanding. I think Keelon Russell is a young quarterback that has an outstanding ability to make plays.
I know he may make some mistakes. I think the resiliency he showed at Kentucky to overcome those mistakes is a real key to his development.”
McAfee cited Alabama’s comeback at Kentucky and the spread, saying, “32 unanswered against Kentucky. Feels like Keelon Russell is just starting to get into it and find his way.
Bama’s defense is fantastic. There’s a reason they’re 19.5-point favorite.
I’m not going against it.” Freeman said, “I’d be a turncoat if I didn’t go with Alabama.”
Herbstreit added, “I think revenge is on the mind for Alabama. Last year’s loss in Tallahassee. ...
Very solid on the back end. They can get after the quarterback.
They get Ashton Daniels to third and 7 today, long day for Florida State’s offense.”
For Florida-Auburn, the panel split. Howard backed the Tigers because “(Auburn’s) been battle tested (with win against Baylor) and they are at home.
I’m going with Auburn.” Saban countered with Florida, saying, “I think Florida has more weapons on offense.
I think Auburn’s defense given up some big plays. I’m going with Florida.”
McAfee said, “I like Sumerall. I like what they are cooking.
Gators over Auburn.” Freeman also went with Florida, citing his grandchild at Florida, while Herbstreit pointed to the Gators’ quarterback play and big-play ability.
