Alabama Defense Keeps Giving Kane Wommack A Reason To Pay Up

Alabama's defensive victories come with a tasty tradition, as DC Kane Wommack keeps team spirits high and Chuck's Fish thriving with celebratory dinners.

Kane Wommack’s defensive staff at Alabama has found a pretty good Sunday-night perk this season: dinner on the coordinator.

The Crimson Tide’s defensive coordinator said Monday that the group has turned a simple postgame tradition into a running joke, with the staff looking for reasons to cash in after strong defensive outings.

“We started off like when we get a defensive touchdown or or a a shutout, you know, we, I take care of the coaching staff on Sunday night, and so I am certainly one of Chuck’s Fish’s best customers at this point,” Wommack said. “You know the running joke now amongst the staff is they find some creative way on top of anything else to give a reason of why they get Chuck’s that week, and usually I give in. But it’s great.”

Chuck’s Fish is a familiar Tuscaloosa spot, and Wommack’s comments made clear the staff has been making good use of it. The restaurant also has locations in Alabama, Athens, Georgia and Tallahassee, Florida, and serves everything from seafood and steaks to sushi.

The latest excuse for a team meal came after Dijon Lee’s pick-six against Mississippi State on Saturday. The Alabama cornerback intercepted Kamario Taylor and returned it for a touchdown, giving Wommack another reason to pick up the bill.

That kind of payoff has not gone unnoticed inside the program. After Alabama’s win over South Carolina, safety Bray Hubbard joked about the arrangement.

“The pick six, I feel bad for coach Wommack,” Hubbard said. “He has to pay for the D-staff and all their meals on Sunday, so I feel bad for him.”

Wommack, though, sounded more than willing to keep the tradition rolling.

“We have a great staff, awesome group of guys that they work their tail off and they make a sacrifice, and so to have something fun outside the building that we can do is really good,” Womack said. “But makes it a whole lot easier.

You know they always thank me. I always say, you know, ‘Thank the guy that got the defensive touchdown.’

So this week it was Dijon.”

Alabama is back on the field Saturday against Georgia. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. CT at Bryant-Denny Stadium, with the game airing on ABC.

Kirby Smart Just Validated Alabamas Identity Ahead Of Georgia

Alabama has spent the season leaning into a physical identity, and that reputation is starting to travel well beyond Tuscaloosa. Defensive coordinator Kane Wommack has repeatedly pointed to the strength of the defensive line and the groups effort as core traits for this team, a profile built as much on strain and toughness as it is on talent. That kind of image matters in a league where line play and grit usually decide whether a contender can hold up when the schedule gets heavy.

Kirby Smart reinforced that view this week ahead of Georgias meeting with Alabama, acknowledging the Crimson Tides size and physicality while also nodding to the way the roster has been built through recruiting and the transfer portal. Smart also singled out quarterback Keelon Russell for the progress he has made, a notable compliment considering how closely these teams will be studying every edge. For Alabama, the recognition is useful, but it also serves as a reminder that its identity is now clear enough for a rival to see and respect. [Read more 🡒]

Alabama-Tennessee Just Got A Twist Fans Will Be Talking About

Alabamas next trip to Knoxville is already on the calendar, and the details around the 2026 matchup with Tennessee give the Third Saturday in October some added shape. The Tide are set to visit Neyland Stadium on Oct. 17, 2026, with a 2:30 p.m. CT kickoff and television information to be announced later, while the broader backdrop is the long-running history between the programs and the recent pattern of how their meetings have been handled.

What makes the scheduling note even more interesting is the jersey arrangement attached to the 2026 and 2027 games, a wrinkle fans will have plenty of time to circle. For now, though, Alabamas attention is on the present, with Georgia coming to Tuscaloosa for a home game that is expected to draw plenty of notable attendees, even as the future date with Tennessee starts to come into focus. Aden Holloways Return Comes With An Early Alabama Setback

Aden Holloways path back to Alabama is set, but it wont be immediate. The guard will suit up for the Crimson Tide in the 2026-27 season, though he is expected to miss the first five games, a stretch that includes three exhibition dates and two early regular-season contests.

The suspension stems from marijuana-related felony charges that were later dropped after Holloway completed a second-chance program built around community service, screenings and fines. Alabama athletics director Greg Byrne said Holloway had accepted responsibility and taken steps to move forward, leaving the Tide to plan for a short-handed start before he is eligible to join the rotation.
