Alabama Can Put LSUs Playoff Case Under The Microscope

Lane Kiffin and LSU brace for a pivotal clash against Alabama this Saturday as both teams seek to bolster their College Football Playoff resumes in a high-stakes November showdown.

Lane Kiffin and LSU are walking into November with the margin for error nearly gone, and Saturday’s trip to face No. 5 Alabama sits right at the center of it all.

The first College Football Playoff rankings dropped Tuesday night, and the Tigers landed at No. 14, tucked behind six other SEC teams. That placement only sharpened the pressure on a stretch that now feels like the defining run of LSU’s season, with nationally ranked opponents stacked ahead and the selection committee set to weigh every detail of the Tigers’ resume.

LSU’s profile is complicated. The Tigers are one of four top-15 teams without a ranked win this season, alongside Notre Dame, UCLA and Wake Forest. Their losses at Ole Miss and Kentucky still hang over the résumé, while the victories over then-ranked Texas A&M and Mississippi State in Baton Rouge have lost some shine.

The Aggies have struggled badly on offense, and Mississippi State has dropped four straight since quarterback Kamario Taylor went down with a toe injury against Alabama that later ended his season.

Still, LSU enters the Alabama game with some metrics working in its favor. The Tigers rank fourth nationally in game control, 23rd in strength of schedule and 16th in strength of record.

And the road only gets steeper from here: LSU’s remaining schedule is the third-toughest in college football, with No. 7 Texas, No.

13 Tennessee and Arkansas still to come after Alabama.

There’s been plenty of talk about Saturday being a CFP eliminator for the loser, but Kiffin pushed back on the idea that either team is finished with three games left after this one. In a season where parity has been a theme, especially in the SEC, he made it clear the Tigers still have time to shape their case.

What LSU cannot afford, though, is another missed chance after falling short on the road against the Rebels and Wildcats. Kiffin knows the weight of that reality. He is 0-5 all-time against Alabama as a head coach and 13-26 overall against nationally ranked opponents.

“I think November meaningful games, I don’t mean this arrogantly, that’s what we’ve been used to for a lot of years now, really every year,” Kiffin said Monday. “I’m glad that’s where we are right now, we should be even better position, but you guys know the (one) game that haunts that of the position we’re in, so it is what it is and less margin for error than we would have. We’ve got to make sure that we perform really well against a really good team that’s coached really well.”

Alabama’s résumé has its own quirks. The Crimson Tide have two ranked wins, against Kentucky and South Carolina, though neither team was ranked in the AP poll when Alabama played them. Both have since surged and are now among the SEC’s hottest teams.

During LSU’s open week, Kiffin said he emphasized physicality and execution against what he sees as an elite opponent.

“You see them and they look like old Alabama teams,” Kiffin said. “I do think this is the most talented, when you take the 22, this is the most talented team we’ve played so far.”

Mississippi State Just Got Pulled Into The Alabama Tennessee CFP Fight

The latest College Football Playoff rankings have only sharpened the debate around Alabamas place in the field, and now Mississippi State has been pulled into the conversation by association. The selection committee put Alabama at No. 5 and Tennessee at No. 13, even with Tennessee owning the head-to-head win, and CFP chairman Hunter Yurachek said the gap came down to Alabamas collection of quality victories against ranked opponents.

For Alabama fans, the takeaway is clear enough: the committee is rewarding resume depth over a single game result, and that makes every ranked opponent the Crimson Tide have beaten feel more valuable. Tennessees case still has its own appeal because the losses have come in close games against ranked teams, but the broader message from the committee is hard to miss, and it leaves the SEC race with another layer of intrigue as the rankings keep sorting themselves out. Alabama Heads To LSU With One Road Problem Still Looming

Alabama heads into Week 10 with a top-15 showdown at LSU carrying the kind of road question that tends to follow a good team until it gets answered. Kalen DeBoers group has handled the season well enough to stay in the national conversation, but the trip to Baton Rouge brings a different test, especially with LSU also sitting among the countrys best and the spotlight on a matchup that has plenty of weight beyond the standings.

The coaching subplot adds another layer, with DeBoer and Lane Kiffin set to meet for the first time and DeBoer still unbeaten against LSU. On the other side, LSU quarterback Sam Leavitt will have to navigate an Alabama defense that has made life difficult for opponents, and the Crimson Tides ability to keep its offense steady away from home may end up being the detail that decides whether this one feels like a statement or another reminder that the road still has work left to do. Alabamas CFP Ranking Just Sparked A Debate Tide Fans Will Feel

Damien Harris did not hide his surprise when the first 2026 College Football Playoff rankings dropped Alabama at No. 5, especially with the loss to Tennessee still hanging over the rsum. The former Crimson Tide running back, now a CBS analyst, voiced the kind of reaction plenty of fans around Tuscaloosa likely had when the bracket picture first came into focus.

Hunter Yurachek, who chairs the College Football Playoff committee, pointed to Alabamas quality wins against Kentucky, South Carolina and Mississippi State as the reason the Tide landed that high despite the setback in Knoxville. It is the sort of early ranking that can fuel a long debate, because Alabamas place near the top says as much about what the committee values as it does about the one loss everyone keeps circling back to.
