Alabama Basketball Just Got National Validation Fans Will Love

As Alabama's fervor for college basketball earns it a spot among the sport's elite fan markets, the spotlight shines on Birmingham's passionate community.

Alabama basketball is playing in one of the country’s strongest fan markets, and new Nielsen data backs it up.

The media research firm’s “Nielsen Scarborough Fandom Index,” released Tuesday, put the Birmingham market at No. 6 nationally for men’s and women’s college basketball fandom. That market, which includes Alabama and UAB, posted a score of 185, landing just behind Indianapolis at No. 5 and just ahead of Omaha.

The SEC showed up well throughout the rankings. Lexington, Kentucky, topped the list with a 289 fandom index score, while Birmingham came in ahead of Knoxville, Tennessee, at No. 8 with a score of 178 and Kansas City, Missouri, at No. 9 with 173.

Two more SEC markets cracked the top 20 as well: Little Rock-Pine Bluff, Arkansas, checked in at No. 14, and Oklahoma City landed at No. 19.

Per Danielle Lerner, a national sports enterprise reporter for USA TODAY:

"The index was created by analyzing data across seven metrics: apparel purchases, event attendance, streaming, social media following, TV viewership, radio listening, and overall interest level."

"While larger media hubs like Los Angeles, Houston and Atlanta didn’t make the list, smaller markets such as Birmingham and Knoxville did because their merchandise sales outpaced TV viewership."

On the court, Nate Oats’ team opened the 2026-27 regular season with a 96-74 win over Sam Houston on Tuesday at Coleman Coliseum. London Jemison and Drew Fielder led Alabama with 15 points apiece, while freshman Tarris Bouie scored 13 and Amari Allen added 12.

The Alabama women also got rolling fast under first-year coach Pauline Love. They beat Queens University 92-56 on Monday, then followed that with a 118-45 win over LSU New Orleans on Wednesday. Eight players reached double figures against the Privateers, with Alayna West pacing the Tide with 17 points.

Alabama’s men are 1-0 and have a busy schedule ahead, including home games against Arkansas State on Nov. 6, Oakland on Nov.

9, Seton Hall on Nov. 13 and Kennesaw State on Nov. 17.

The Tide also have nonconference matchups with Baylor in Las Vegas on Nov. 24, Miami on Dec.

2, Houston in New York on Dec. 8, St.

John’s in Birmingham on Dec. 12, South Florida on Dec. 16 and Iowa on Dec. 21 before SEC play ramps up in January.

The conference slate includes trips to Mississippi State, Arkansas, South Carolina, Missouri, Kentucky, Texas and Auburn, plus home dates with LSU, Ole Miss, Florida, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt and Georgia. Alabama’s listed record is 1-0.

Alabama Heads To LSU With One Big Availability Question

With the Southeastern Conference now requiring injury reports for football, basketball and baseball conference games starting in 2024, Alabamas weekly availability picture has become part of the conversation as much as the matchup itself. Heading into its seventh SEC game of the 2026 season against LSU, the Crimson Tide is still sorting through a roster that has been hit by injuries, even as head coach Kalen DeBoer said several previously sidelined players are making progress in their recoveries.

There is still no shortage of uncertainty around the depth chart, though, and Alabama is carrying some season-ending absences into this stretch, including Jeremiah Beaman and Cayden Jones. For a team entering one of the SECs biggest rivalry games, the question is less about who is already ruled out and more about which of the recovering players can actually make it back in time to matter against LSU. Alabama Heads Into LSU Week With One Big Availability Problem

Alabamas first availability report for LSU week brought a familiar kind of late-season concern, with five starters and one key running back listed as questionable because of injuries. There is some optimism around several of those names, including Ryan Coleman-Williams, Terrance Green and Racin Delgatty, but the list also leaves room for real uncertainty as the Crimson Tide work through the week.

Zabien Brown, Will Sanders and EJ Crowell are among the players whose status remains less clear, and that is where the issue starts to matter beyond just the injury report itself. How much depth Alabama has to lean on, and how effective it can be if a few of those pieces are limited or unavailable, could shape the way this matchup with LSU unfolds. [Read more 🡒]

Alabama Faces A Brutal LSU Warning Ahead Of Playoff Test

The buildup to Alabamas next test has turned into a warning label, and Joel Klatt is not sugarcoating it. In previewing the matchup with LSU, the Fox Sports analyst pointed to the Tigers pass rush and overall defensive play as the kind of pressure that can expose some of Alabamas recent issues on the ground, a concern that matters even more with the playoff picture tightening.

Klatt also leaned into LSUs recent momentum at quarterback, noting Sam Leavitts strong play, while the injury situation for both teams adds another layer to a game that already feels like a measuring stick. He went as far as to pick LSU to win, projecting a 30-17 final, which only sharpens the stakes for Alabama as it heads into a matchup where the margin for error looks thin. [Read more 🡒]
