Aggies Coach Slams Star Recruit's Disturbing Motto

Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko addresses a contentious remark made by star player DJ Hicks, spotlighting the importance of maintaining integrity within the team's evolving culture.

The Texas A&M Aggies are on a mission to redefine their identity on the defensive line as they step into spring football. Yet, the vision that defensive tackle DJ Hicks shared recently isn't quite aligning with what head coach Mike Elko has in mind.

During a media availability session on Wednesday, Hicks was asked about the new identity of the Aggies' defensive line and the lessons they've taken from future NFL talents like Shemar Stewart, Shemar Turner, and Nic Scourton. His answer was unexpected, to say the least.

Hicks elaborated on the legacy left by these departing stars, emphasizing their work ethic and professionalism. "Those guys really showed us how to be, how to be the best D-line we can be with their work ethic and how they went about their daily business,” Hicks said.

“We’re still trying to follow that model and our motto, which is 'C.B.O.' That’s what we stand for.

Following Coach Spence’s and Coach Tony’s guidance, I think we’re poised to make significant strides this year.”

However, the explanation of 'C.B.O.' took a controversial turn. Hicks explained it with a phrase that was startlingly inappropriate.

The response from Coach Elko was swift and to the point. Describing Hicks' statement as "ridiculous," Elko expressed clear disapproval.

"It's conveying something that shouldn't be conveyed," Elko commented, indicating that the matter would be promptly addressed. "That's absolutely ridiculous that that was stated."

Hicks, a prominent recruit from the 2022 class hailed as a five-star talent and recognized as the nation's top defensive tackle, has been a crucial part of the Aggies' roster. Despite being one of the few members of that celebrated class still in College Station, Hicks' on-field impact has yet to match his recruitment hype. The upcoming 2025 season is set as a pivotal moment for him to step into a more impactful role.
