With Wisconsin winding down fall camp and a scrimmage-like session set for Sunday, Saturday’s practice was never going to offer a ton of hard evidence. The work was light, there was no tackling, and only a handful of live periods gave anyone much to chew on. But in a camp where most starting spots seem settled, one of the biggest remaining battles produced the clearest individual statement of the day.
That fight is at cornerback on the wide side of the field, where Mike Tressel’s defense still has one notable opening. Javan Robinson is set along the boundary, while Jai’mier Scott and Eric Fletcher have spent camp trading reps and pushing each other for the other starting job. On Saturday, Fletcher was the one who stood out.
The bigger picture around that competition hasn’t changed much. At this point, it doesn’t feel like Wisconsin is choosing between two corners so much as sorting out which one gets the first nod when the season opens on Sept.
- Both have worked with the ones, and both appear likely to be part of the plan.
If anything, the shared reps suggest the Badgers may simply be leaning into having two corners they trust.
Fletcher, who played 136 snaps across 10 games in 2025 at Oklahoma State, is looking for a larger role in 2026. He hasn’t been flawless this fall, but he’s had a strong camp overall, and Saturday added another highlight to the list.
His first interception came early, when he took away the underneath options from Deuce Adams and forced a throw toward the left sideline. Adams tried to squeeze the ball up the boundary in front of the safety, but Fletcher read it cleanly, got back, and picked it off.
Later, during one of the few live periods, Fletcher came away with a second interception, this time against Colton Joseph. The throw wasn’t a wild mistake, but Fletcher was in excellent position along the right sideline. When Joseph tried to thread the ball into a tight window, Fletcher jumped the route and snagged it for another takeaway.
Because the practice was so limited, it’s tough to say whether the offense or defense had the better day overall. But when it came to the players who made the strongest individual impression, Fletcher owned Saturday.
And with Scott still in the mix, the cornerback battle remains open enough that Wisconsin probably won’t have a final answer until Sept. 6.
Still, both players are going to see the field, and that makes the production from that spot all the more encouraging.
