The Wisconsin Badgers opened the 2026 season with two very different nights in the AVCA First Serve, taking on a pair of top-10 opponents on national television and coming away with a split.
Friday brought a tough first test against No. 3 Kentucky, and the Wildcats handled the closing stretches better to win in three sets, 25-20, 26-24, 25-18. Kentucky hit .380 on the night, while Wisconsin finished at .186 and piled up 21 errors.
The Badgers were in the mix early. Kentucky held a narrow 8-7 edge after the first 15 points before a three-point burst helped it create separation. Wisconsin cut the deficit to 15-14 behind a pair of kills from senior transfer Eva Travis, but Kentucky finished the set on a 7-3 run.
The second set turned into a grinder. Wisconsin jumped out to a 10-7 lead, and then neither side could shake loose.
The teams were tied at 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 20, 21, 22, 23 and 24 before Kentucky finally landed the last two punches. Back-to-back kills from Lizzie Carr pushed the Wildcats over the line, 26-24.
Kentucky took control of the third set early, though Wisconsin did answer with a push of its own and got within 11-10. The Wildcats answered with a 4-1 run, and when the Badgers trimmed it to 15-13, that was as close as they would get. Kentucky pulled away late to finish the sweep.
Travis paced Wisconsin with 13 kills. Freshmen Audrey Flanagan and Lynney Tarnow added nine and eight kills, respectively, and Charlie Fuerbringer ran the offense with 36 assists while also collecting eight digs.
Brooklyn Deleye led Kentucky with 12 kills, and Morgan Gaerte added 10.
Saturday night looked nothing like Friday.
Against No. 7 Louisville, a team that had just beaten No.
8 Texas A&M, Wisconsin settled in and controlled the match from start to finish in a 25-18, 25-20, 25-18 sweep. After committing 21 errors against Kentucky, the Badgers cleaned things up with just 11 errors and hit .327, compared to Louisville’s .234.
The opening set was tight early, with the score knotted at 10 apiece. Wisconsin then ripped off a 4-0 run and stayed in command the rest of the way, never letting Louisville get closer than two points.
The second set followed a similar script. The Badgers opened up an 11-5 lead after a separate 4-0 burst and kept the Cardinals at arm’s length the rest of the frame, closing it out 25-20.
The third set was more of the same. Wisconsin jumped to a 5-1 lead and never gave Louisville much room to breathe, rolling to another 25-18 finish.
Flanagan led the Badgers with 13 kills in the win. Grace Egan contributed nine digs and three aces, while Fuerbringer finished with 33 assists and eight digs and was named MVP of the match.

Wisconsin Still Has One Big O-Line Decision Before Notre Dame
Wisconsin wrapped up fall camp with a live scrimmage and now turns its attention to the opener against Notre Dame, but the biggest question left on the offensive line is still in front of Luke Fickell and his staff. Emerson Mandell and Kevin Heywood have missed most of camp because of injuries, spending their time away from full team drills, and the Badgers are now racing the calendar as they sort out who will be ready and who will have to step in.
Lucas Simmons-Johansson looks positioned to fill in for Heywood if needed, while Blake Cherry or Stylz Blackmon could be the answer at Mandells spot.
