That matters because the Commanders are staring at a difficult opening stretch, and a fast start could shape everything that comes next. If Washington can stay in the mix through the bye week, Quinn’s group could put itself back on a path toward contention. And if that happens, a few players will have a real chance to change the way they’re viewed in Washington.
Mike Sainristil is one of the clearest examples. The second-round pick from 2024 quickly became a meaningful piece of the defense, and his game has already shown both sides of the coin: he creates turnovers, but he also gives up too many explosive plays.
That’s where Daronte Jones enters the picture. His reputation with defensive backs is strong, and the hope is that he can help Sainristil find the right balance.
There’s no mystery about the talent. The bigger question is how it gets shaped.
Sainristil is undersized, and the source of some of the inconsistency may be the back-and-forth between playing inside and outside. Settling him into one spot could help.
Washington also added Rasul Douglas to ease the cornerback situation, but the Commanders still need their young defenders to grow into cornerstone roles.
If Sainristil can tighten up his coverage while still making plays on the ball, his profile changes fast. He already has two years of experience, and with Jones in place, Washington is betting he can become a more complete player.
