Capitals Make A Blue Line Move Fans Need To Watch

Two NHL teams bolster their defense by claiming available talent off the waiver wire, shaking up their rosters in a strategic mid-season move.

The NHL waiver wire moved twice on Saturday, and both players who were on it the day before wound up landing somewhere else.

Nashville and Washington each stepped in, with the Predators and Capitals making claims that kept defensemen Daemon Hunt and Jack St. Ivany on NHL rosters, just in different sweaters.

According to The Athletic’s Michael Russo, Nashville grabbed Hunt from Minnesota. Winnipeg Free Press writer Ken Wiebe reported that Washington claimed St.

Ivany from Winnipeg.

Hunt, 24, had opened the 2026-27 regular season with 11 games for the Wild before Minnesota put him on waivers. The 6-foot-1 left-shot defenseman did not post a point and averaged 14:08 of ice time. He now heads to a Predators team that is dealing with an injury to defenseman William Trudeau.

Minnesota originally took Hunt in the third round, No. 65 overall, of the 2020 NHL Draft. He stood out with the WHL’s Moose Jaw Warriors before turning pro in 2022.

The Brandon, Man., native also spent a brief stretch in the Columbus Blue Jackets organization during the 2024-25 season after being included in the David Jiricek trade, then returned to the Wild early in 2025-26. Across 61 career NHL games in the regular season and playoffs, Hunt has eight points, all of them assists.

St. Ivany, 27, had played four scoreless games for the Jets to begin the new season before he hit waivers and was claimed by Washington. The Capitals are currently without Rasmus Sandin and Vincent Desharnais.

A 6-foot-4 right-shot defenseman, St. Ivany was drafted by the Flyers in the fourth round in 2018.

He launched his pro career in 2022 after four NCAA seasons split between Yale and Boston College, then signed with Pittsburgh. In June, the Penguins dealt him to Winnipeg for forward David Gustafsson.

St. Ivany has nine assists in 57 career NHL games.

Hunt and St. Ivany were the only two players on Friday’s waiver wire, and both were claimed. Brennan Klak later reported that three more players were waived on Saturday.

Capitals Got The Win But Another Problem Didnt Go Away

Alex Tuch came through with a big night in a familiar building, scoring twice to help the Capitals rally for a 4-3 overtime win over the Sabres. Dylan Strome matched him with two goals of his own as Washington dug out of an early hole and found a way to leave with two points despite spending much of the night chasing the game.

For a team trying to steady itself, the result mattered more than the style points, but the same defensive issues that have surfaced before were still there in plain view. Washington got the comeback it needed and the overtime finish it wanted, yet the win did not erase the lingering concern that made the night feel more complicated than the final score suggested. Islanders Still Stuck Waiting On A Real Mathew Barzal Update

The Capitals are getting some help back up the middle, with Pierre-Luc Dubois and Justin Sourdif set to return against Buffalo after each missed recent games because of illness. Dubois is still on injured reserve, but his return can be handled without any roster move, giving Washington a little more flexibility as it gets bodies back into the lineup.

Elsewhere around the division, the news only adds to the sense of week-to-week uncertainty that seems to follow the injured list. Islanders center Mathew Barzal is still sidelined with knee inflammation and there is no clear timeline for when he might be back, which leaves New York waiting for a more concrete update than the one it has so far.
