Houston is bringing a full-on space spectacle to Saturday’s “Space Bowl” against UCF.
The Cougars will roll out a fresh set of helmets as part of their Built By Houston series, and this year’s look is built around the solar system. Houston says the “one-of-a-kind, hand-painted helmets” are meant to take fans around the galaxy, with designs that move from the Sun all the way to Pluto.
The effect is striking: the helmets are styled like astronaut gear, complete with a planet reflected in the visor. Houston’s site says the collection starts with the Sun and becomes more uncommon the farther it moves out through the Solar System.
The distribution is just as wild as the design. According to the Cougars’ website, 45 players will wear the Sun version, 23 will be in Mercury helmets, and the count keeps dropping until only one player gets the hand-painted Pluto helmet.
Houston football teased the look with the line, “INTRODUCING: THE GRIDIRON GALAXY” and added, “10 helmets. Each with a connection to Houston that will be worn Saturday morning vs UCF #BuiltByHouston x #GoCoogs”
The program also posted, “Mission Control Houston, we are go for launch🪐 #BuiltByHouston x #GoCoogs”
UCF won’t be plain on Saturday either. The Knights are set to unveil their own new look under the title “Mission X: Origin Story,” with a launch date of October 30.
The game itself brings together two teams with NASA ties, and Houston and UCF meet with a little history already in the books. Houston won last season’s matchup 30-27, while UCF still holds the edge in the all-time series, 8-4.

Texas Tech Is Suddenly Rolling In More Than Just Football
Texas Tech has plenty to enjoy beyond a fast start on the football field. The Red Raiders are 5-0 for the second straight season after a 29-7 win over Colorado, and the schools other programs have been supplying their own reasons for optimism, from the womens soccer team stacking shutouts to the mens golf team turning in a strong showing in Big 12 Match Play.
There is also some concrete news on the basketball front, with the 2026-27 mens schedule and broadcast details now out. For a fan base used to measuring October by football alone, it is a reminder that Techs fall sports calendar has started to look a lot busier, and a lot more successful, across the board. Texas Tech Has A Real Reason To Root Hard For BYU
BYU heads into its non-conference matchup with Notre Dame carrying more than its own ambitions. The game has playoff implications for both the Cougars and the Big 12, and for Texas Tech, the stakes are easy to understand: a BYU win would help strengthen the conferences case for multiple College Football Playoff bids later on. Even before kickoff, BYU is dealing with a notable setback after running back L.J. Martin was ruled out because of injury, and ESPNs Matchup Predictor gives the Cougars just a 21.8% chance to pull it off.
For the Red Raiders, that makes this one of those Saturdays worth following from a distance. A strong showing by BYU against Notre Dame would not only boost the leagues overall profile, it could also create a better path for Big 12 teams like Texas Tech if the playoff field opens up the way conference hopefuls want. The challenge is obvious, though, with BYU entering as an underdog and facing a tough national test on the road to keep that bigger conference picture alive. [Read more 🡒]
Houston Is Suddenly Part Of Texas Techs Statewide Rise
Texas Tech has put itself in rare air through five games, unbeaten and sitting in the top 10 nationally, the kind of start that turns a good September into a statewide statement. Among the nine undefeated teams in the Football Bowl Subdivision, the Red Raiders have separated themselves not just by winning, but by pairing that record with significant victories and strong placement in the major polls and advanced metrics.
Houston suddenly fits into a much bigger Texas conversation because the Red Raiders are making a case as the states top FBS team heading into week seven, ahead of the Longhorns in the broader comparison of record and schedule strength. For a program that has been trying to climb back into the upper tier of the sport, the early evidence suggests Texas Tech is not just surviving the fall, but helping define it for the rest of the state.
