Tennessee’s 2026 recruiting class brought in plenty of future building blocks, but a few newcomers may not wait long to make their presence felt. Even with the Vols bringing in a loaded group, there are freshmen who could force their way onto the field early.
Among that group, Tristen Keys looks like the cleanest bet. The five-star receiver arrived with the kind of reputation that turns heads immediately, and Tennessee’s wideout room may be crowded, but he still has a path to snaps this season. Keys finished high school in December and has already been working in coach Heupel’s offense since then, which should leave him well ahead of the usual freshman learning curve by the time September rolls around.
His skill set also gives the Vols something they can use. Keys brings explosive play ability to the offense, and Andrew Ivins of 247 Sports compared him to Dallas Cowboys star CeeDee Lamb. Keys did miss most of his senior year after playing only four games because of a knee injury, but he should be back to 100% now.
Brayden Rouse is another freshman who could climb into the mix quickly. The four-star linebacker from Georgia made a major leap in the rankings during his junior season, going from unranked to a top-five linebacker in the country. He backed that up with another strong senior year and now enters college with real momentum.
Rouse has also drawn strong feedback from coaches in recent months as he gets ready for his first college game in a little under a month. Ivins compared him to Daiyan Henley of the Los Angeles Chargers, though Rouse is a few inches taller than Henley and should add more muscle as his career moves along.
The path is open for him, too. Arion Carter will be suspended to start the season, and Jaedon Harmon is out for the entire year, which creates an opportunity for Rouse to get on the field early.
Then there’s Faizon Brandon, who enters a different kind of situation altogether. The five-star quarterback from last year’s recruiting cycle is competing with George MacIntyre for the starting job this fall, and Heupel still hasn’t named a starter. It may take a few games before Tennessee fully sorts out who the quarterback will be moving forward.
Ivins compared Brandon to Geno Smith, a former first-round pick. At 6-foot-4, Brandon brings size, passing ability and enough athleticism to be a sneaky running threat as well. Reports have said he may be ahead in the race, but with fall camp just getting underway, nothing is settled yet.
Even if Brandon doesn’t win the job, Tennessee is still likely to look for ways to get him on the field at different points during the season.
