Blues Suddenly Have A Bigger Decision To Make On Adam Jiricek

Deck: Adam Jiricek's unexpected NHL debut draws high praise from Coach Montgomery, setting lofty expectations for the rising defenseman amidst the St. Louis Blues' challenges.

Adam Jiricek’s NHL debut arrived sooner than anyone in St. Louis expected, and Jim Montgomery didn’t waste much time turning the praise dial all the way up.

The Blues’ youngest defenseman got the call in Dallas for the season opener because of injuries on the blue line, and he didn’t look like a player scrambling to survive his first night. He looked composed, steady and ready to belong.

Montgomery was especially struck by how Jiricek handled the moment after getting a full preseason education under his belt. The rookie had impressed the coach then, and one game into the real thing, that feeling only got stronger.

"“It looked like he’s been in the league for three years: calm … he made plays in the second where we were not at our best and he just seemed like, ‘OK I’ll just carry it into the zone.’ It was impressive how calm he looked.”"

Blues head coach Jim Montgomery

Jiricek logged 16:35 on the night, skating on the top pairing with Philip Borberg. He finished with two shots on goal and even had a goal wiped away on an offside ruling.

That performance has put him squarely in the middle of the next stretch for St. Louis.

He’s effectively working through an eight-week tryout until Logan Mailloux is re-evaluated from his hand surgery. There’s a path where both Mailloux and Jiricek fit on the blue line, but it would require other pieces to come out, with Carlo mentioned as a possible candidate if he isn’t facing a suspension.

For now, though, Jiricek’s job is simpler: keep showing he can handle it.

The Blues can’t afford for the rookie’s game to wobble too much from here. Growing pains are coming at some point for the 22-year-old, and how severe they are will shape what the next few weeks look like. That matters even more with Alexey Toropchenko hurt on the forward side and Carlo potentially staring at a suspension.

Still, the early signs were strong. St.

Louis looked connected, and Jiricek was part of why. In a game where the Blues needed poise, he delivered it.

Montgomery sees it. The fan base sees it.

And now the challenge is to keep it going.

Blues Rolled Ottawa But One Lingering Problem Still Looks Serious

The Blues got the kind of result that can make a room feel a little lighter, rolling Ottawa 7-2 in a game that featured contributions across the lineup. Pius Suter, Colton Parayko, Mason McTavish, Jake Neighbours and Adam Jiricek all found ways to help, and the kind of balanced scoring St. Louis was looking for showed up in a big way.

Still, the special teams work remains the part that does not quite fit with the rest of the night. The power play managed only one goal on three chances against the Senators and has been stuck at a low success rate early in the season, leaving the Blues with a clear issue to clean up even after a lopsided win. Mason McTavish Is Already Changing How Blues Fans View This Deal

Mason McTavish is wasting no time making the kind of first impression that can alter the mood around a summer trade. Through the opening stretch of the 2026-27 season, he has emerged as one of St. Louis most productive forwards, giving the Blues a needed lift in secondary scoring and showing signs that he fits cleanly at even strength.

For a club that paid a steep draft-day price to bring him in from Anaheim, the early returns have given fans plenty to chew on. McTavish is already pacing the team in goals and points, and the broader numbers suggest this has been more than a hot start, with his all-around impact beginning to justify why the Blues were willing to make the deal in the first place. Blues Injuries Just Opened A Real Door For Otto Stenberg

The Blues forward group has taken a hit, and the ripple effect reaches beyond the obvious injuries. With Alexei Toropchenko and Dillon Dube both out, St. Louis suddenly has openings in its bottom six, and that has put prospect Otto Stenberg back into the conversation as the club looks for ways to patch together its lineup and keep its depth intact.

Stenberg has been on the radar as a future option, but the situation has made the path look more immediate than it did a few days ago. The Blues have not announced any call-up, and they are still sorting through how to fill those minutes, but this is the kind of opening young forwards wait for, especially when a team needs help in the middle of its lineup.
