Steelers Rookie Gabriel Rubio Is Forcing A Bigger Defensive Role

Can the unexpected rise of rookie Gabriel Rubio shore up the Steelers' defensive line for years to come?

The Steelers took a swing on Gabriel Rubio in the sixth round of the 2026 NFL Draft, and early on, that bet looks a lot smarter than it did on draft day.

Rubio, the defensive lineman out of Notre Dame, got his NFL debut because of injuries, and in his first real action he handled the assignment the Steelers gave him. It was only a small slice of work, but the first impression was strong enough to matter.

At 6-foot-5 and 321 pounds, Rubio is hard to miss - and hard to get around. He brings the kind of size that jumps off the roster page, but the more important part is what he pairs with it: energy, effort, technique, and a clear willingness to keep improving.

In Week 5, Rubio was on the field for just 14 defensive snaps, yet he still came away with three assisted tackles. That number stands out on its own, but the real value was how often he stayed active after contact and kept working through blocks. Even in run-heavy situations, he showed a nonstop motor and an ability to stay attached to the play long enough to make a difference.

What stood out most was how he used his frame and lower-body strength. Against quality offensive linemen, Rubio was able to win at the point of attack and free himself in time to get near the ball carrier. His hands are still coming along, but the power and movement skills already show up, and they show up in a way that plays at this level.

One snap captured a lot of that. Indianapolis was in 12 personnel, and this time the look turned into play-action.

Rubio was locked up with the left guard at the snap as the play developed into a throw to Jonathan Taylor in the flat. Rubio kept his eyes up, tracked the quarterback, and when he recognized pass, he tried to shed and get a hand up to knock it down.

When that didn’t happen, he redirected and chased the play. Payton Wilson got there first, but Rubio followed right behind and helped finish it off after Taylor had already caught the ball with roughly 10 to 15 yards of space between them and the play.

The Steelers may still be looking at changes on defense, just as they made adjustments on offense after their Week 2 loss. A linebacker trade or a move in the secondary could be part of that. But up front, the depth has become the clearest strength on the defensive side, and Rubio is part of that picture.

As Derrick Harmon continues to recover, Rubio should keep earning snaps on game day. If he keeps producing in the same way, whether it’s 14 plays or 41, he’ll keep making his case as more than just a late-round dart throw.

For a sixth-round pick, that’s a pretty good return.

Steelers Could Have A Trade Deadline Opening They Rarely Get

The trade deadline does not often hand the Steelers a clear buying opportunity, but this year could look different. With Pittsburgh sitting at 4-2, the front office may have a chance to add help if teams around the league decide to sell, and a handful of struggling clubs have already started to look like realistic sources of available talent.

The Los Angeles Chargers, Miami Dolphins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Tennessee Titans have all been mentioned as teams that could be open for business before the Nov. 10 deadline, which puts Pittsburgh in a spot it rarely enjoys. The list of potential fits is broad enough to cover several needs, with names like Ladd McConkey, Chris Godwin and Amani Hooker among the possible targets, leaving the Steelers with options if they decide this is the moment to be aggressive. Steelers Fans Just Got Painful Validation On George Pickens

George Pickens has always been the kind of talent that makes coaches keep one eye on the upside and the other on the fine print, and the latest reminder came from Dallas. Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer publicly called out the wide receiver for his effort during a Week 6 game, pointing to issues not just in his receiving routes but in the less glamorous parts of the job that Pittsburgh fans know well.

For Steelers followers, the criticism lands with a familiar sting because the questions around Pickens were never only about whether he could make contested catches. His time in Pittsburgh included games where the effort concerns became impossible to ignore, and Schottenheimers comments only bring that conversation back into the open. The unresolved part now is whether Pickens can change that reputation before it hardens any further. [Read more 🡒]

Steelers Fans Have A New Paris Concern Before Sundays Trip

A week that was already giving Steelers fans reason to pay attention to Paris got a little more complicated when unrest in the city forced Ligue 1 to move the Paris Saint-Germain-Lyon match from Sunday to Monday, Oct. 26. The Ligue de Football Professionnel made the change after an order from the Paris Police Prefecture, another sign that the situation around the French capital is still unsettled heading into the weekend.

For Pittsburgh supporters making the trip, the timing matters because the Steelers are still slated to play at Stade de France on Sunday, and any shift in the citys mood only adds to the uncertainty around a high-profile overseas game. The team had already scrapped a fan event in Paris because of the turmoil, so while the football itself remains on the calendar, the rest of the weekend is looking harder to plan by the day.
