Eagles Suddenly Have A Big Monday Night Question On Offense

Despite limited participation from Saquon Barkley, the Eagles face a challenging injury report as they prepare for a crucial matchup against the Cowboys.

The Eagles’ first injury report of the week came with a familiar mix of relief and concern: some important pieces are trending in the right direction, while several key offensive names sat out entirely on Thursday ahead of Monday Night Football against the Cowboys.

Saquon Barkley was among the limited participants, and the optimism there is obvious. He’s reportedly “in line” to play for the first time since his hamstring injury in Week 4, but the next two days of practice will matter. The Eagles will want to see more than just a limited session before deciding whether he can handle a full game workload.

DeVonta Smith was one of six players who did not practice. Smith also missed the opening practice last week before ramping up over the following two days, so there’s at least a recent blueprint for how the Eagles might handle him.

He’s still dealing with a hamstring injury. Joining him on the no-practice list was Dontayvion Wicks, who is now dealing with an ankle injury after previously missing time with a hamstring issue.

Dallas Goedert also sat out with a knee injury, and it’s not clear whether this is tied to the same problem that had already cost him time. With the Eagles waiving E.J.

Jenkins, Johnny Mundt is currently the only healthy tight end on the active roster. The team could still explore other options, including bringing Zach Ertz up from the practice squad or activating Grant Calcaterra and/or rookie Eli Stowers from injured reserve.

Nolan Smith missed practice because of the concussion he suffered in Week 6, putting him in danger of missing at least one game. Willie Lampkin was out with an illness, though the expectation is that he should still be available if the issue isn’t serious. Michael Carter II was also listed as a non-participant, but he was doing rehab work on a side field, which at least looks like a step forward from last week.

The limited group included a lot of familiar names beyond Barkley. Landon Dickerson has been limited ever since the Eagles opened his 21-day window to return from injured reserve, and he’s now being listed with both knee and pectoral injuries.

Jalyx Hunt returned to practice after the scary Week 5 injury that sent him to the sideline. Jonathan Greenard was limited while dealing with a nagging ankle injury.

Drew Kendall may be close to a return after the Eagles used him as an emergency backup in Week 6, though he’ll likely need a full practice before taking over at center. Tyler Steen, who left Week 5 with a shoulder injury, was limited as the Eagles continue to manage him at right guard.

Moro Ojomo, who got banged up in Week 6, and A.J. Epenesa, who missed Week 6 with a back injury, also worked on a limited basis.

There was better news on the full-participation side. Jordan Davis was a full go after needing help off the field on Sunday.

Jihaad Campbell had the knee removed from his injury designation and is now listed only with a wrist issue. Grant Calcaterra was full again after being limited early in the week last week before ending up full on Friday, a pattern that could point toward activation from injured reserve for Monday night.

The full list also included Zack Baun, Jalen Carter, Arnold Ebiketie, Britain Covey, Jakorian Bennett, Hollywood Brown, and Eli Stowers.

For Dallas, four players did not practice: Dee Winters, KaVontae Turpin, Von Miller, and Drew Shelton. Winters, who was hurt in Week 6, appears to be in real doubt.

That’s not ideal for a defense that already needs help, even if DeMarvion Overshown is expected back this week. Turpin, one of the NFL’s better returners, is also in jeopardy for Monday night.

Miller’s absence was rest-related, while Shelton does not play much.

The Cowboys also had four players limited: George Pickens, Cobie Durant, Tyler Guyton, and Marist Liufau. Pickens is a new name on the report after getting banged up in Week 6.

Durant could be back in the starting lineup for the first time since his Week 2 injury. Guyton, who was listed as a full participant last week with a back injury, now has a calf issue after Week 6.

Liufau is practicing while working through his 21-day return window from injured reserve. The Cowboys also listed Alijah Clark, DeMarvion Overshown, and Ameer Speed on the report.

Eagles May Have Found An Unexpected Edge Rusher To Watch

When the Eagles needed help on the edge, Keyshawn James-Newby suddenly found himself in the middle of the action. The rookie had spent the year on the practice squad before being elevated for his first NFL game, and the opportunity came with a much bigger workload than anyone likely expected.

James-Newby ended up logging 48 snaps and held up well enough to get noticed by teammates and Vic Fangio after the game. He chipped in two tackles and two hurries, and for a player who was just trying to make the most of a call-up, that kind of debut gives Philadelphia something interesting to track as the edge room continues to sort itself out. Eagles Suddenly Face Bigger Questions Than The Jalen Hurts Controversy

Saquon Barkley pushed back on the swirl around Jalen Hurts this week, making clear he did not like the way the quarterbacks situation was being framed. Barkley praised Hurts and wished him a speedy recovery, trying to steer the conversation away from any suggestion that the issue should be read as the Eagles and their quarterback being on opposite sides of the same story.

The larger concern in Philadelphia is that the Hurts situation may only be the start of what comes next. Once a team is suddenly dealing with a major health issue at quarterback, the questions do not stay confined to one player for long, and the chatter around Barkley has already drifted into whether the roster picture could change in a bigger way. Saquon Barkley Sees One Reason Eagles Can Still Make A Run

Even with a four-game losing streak and the reality of Jalen Hurts being out for the season, Saquon Barkley is still looking at the Eagles through an optimistic lens. The veteran back pointed to the teams remaining talent and the culture around the locker room as reasons Philadelphia can still keep fighting, even as injuries have changed the shape of the year.

Barkleys own return matters, too, with the running back expected back in the lineup after recovering from a hamstring injury. Philadelphia heads into its next matchup with Dallas carrying plenty of uncertainty, but Barkleys view is that the door is still open for this group to make something of the stretch run. [Read more 🡒]
