Odell Beckham Jr. is finally getting a real look with the Giants’ first team.
On Tuesday in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., the former Giants star worked with Jaxson Dart’s top offense after spending the first week of camp with limited snaps and only a few targets overall. Beckham got open early, settling into a soft spot in zone coverage for a catch over the middle from Dart, and he added a couple more receptions as the day went on.
The increased workload came at least partly because other receivers were unavailable or limited. Juju Smith-Schuster sat out with knee swelling, while Darius Slayton and rookie Malachi Fields didn’t do much.
Even with the extra reps, Beckham had been waiting for this chance. He had mostly been on the field with backup quarterback Jameis Winston before Tuesday, and his opportunities had been sparse in a crowded receiver room. When he has been out there, he’s often been asked to clear space underneath for teammates, or he’s had passes sail over his head on deeper throws.
Both Dart and Winston have tried to push the ball to him downfield.
Tuesday still wasn’t clean. Dart has struggled to complete passes consistently early in camp, and one target to Beckham from the 3-yard line ended with an overthrow and an incompletion.
But Beckham still looks sharp enough to matter. He’s moving well on deeper crossers and still has the burst to get up the field, which is why John Harbaugh should keep feeding him while Malik Nabers remains out of team drills. Nabers did more individual work Tuesday, but he was still not in full team action.
Isaiah Likely said Beckham’s presence still looks familiar.
“I feel like he looked like O,” tight end Isaiah Likely said. “I joke with O all the time… The young guys ask him how he did it the right way when he was at the top of the top, prime Odell, everything.
And then obviously, the dark days Odell, which he’ll tell you, as well. And really just how he stayed the course and really just honed in and understanding that when he’s out here, he’s giving you the best version of himself.”
There was plenty going on around Beckham, too. Dalen Cambre had a strong day catching passes from Winston, who also threw an end zone interception to Jason Pinnock before getting an extra snap and connecting with Ryan Miller for a touchdown.
The offense’s sloppiness showed up early, with four penalties in the first 21 snaps across both the first and second units. False starts were charged to Darnell Mooney, Francis Mauigoa and Josh Ezeudu.
