P.J. Fleck isn’t shutting the door on a new sideline celebration for Minnesota, and this one comes with a Scandinavian twist.
During Big Ten media days on Wednesday in Chicago, the Gophers coach said the team could be looking at adding the “Viking Row” - the fan and player pantomime of rowing a Viking ship that caught on during Norway’s run in the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Norway reached the quarterfinals before losing to England, and the celebration became a signature part of the team’s success, with players and fans chanting and rowing while Erling Haaland banged a drum.
“I love it. Could be in the works,” Fleck teased during Big Ten media days on Wednesday.
Minnesota has already built its identity around Fleck’s “Row the Boat” mantra, which he brought with him from Western Michigan when he took over the Gophers in 2017. More than nine years later, the idea of folding in the Viking Row seems to fit naturally, especially with Minnesota’s large population of people with Norwegian descent.
The Gophers were already aware of the celebration from earlier soccer tournaments, but Norway’s run this year brought it back into focus. Fleck said, “It catches on,” when talking about why it might work in Minnesota.
Fleck’s media session also opened with a more somber note. He paid tribute to former Gophers baseball coach John Anderson, who died last week, and to Joe Novak, Fleck’s coach at Northern Illinois, who died Monday at 81.
“He changed my life. I wouldn’t be here without Joe Novak,” Fleck said.
