According to an anonymous Chiefs player who spoke to the Daily Mail, the wedding invite list sparked real friction among teammates. The source said “snippy text messages” started flying in different group chats as players reacted to the situation.
“It’s really their wedding and I understand why they wouldn’t have invited him,” the player said. “But there’s some difference of opinion. Lots of texts are going around the team, and some people who are close to Harrison feel like he was snubbed.”
The same source said most players were invited individually rather than through one team-wide message, which only made Butker’s absence feel more pointed. The player also suggested Butker and Kelce were never especially close.
“If Harrison had really wanted to come, he probably could have,” the player added. “But they’re not close, so he wasn’t going to go, even if he had been invited.”
There was even a sense that some players were poking at the situation, with the source saying a portion of the roster texted Butker directly to see how he would react. He did not reply.
Butker and Kelce have been teammates since 2017 and have won three Super Bowls together, but their relationship has appeared to cool since Butker’s controversial 2024 commencement speech at Benedictine College. In that address, he called Pride Month “a deadly sin” and suggested women should consider prioritizing being a “homemaker.” Kelce publicly disagreed with those comments, and that split seems to have stuck around.
None of that affected Butker’s work on the field Saturday. He accounted for all nine of Kansas City’s points in the loss, and his teammates reacted like it mattered, swarming him after the 59-yarder split the uprights and tapping his helmet in celebration.
The whole episode fits into a summer where Kelce and Swift’s marriage has followed the Chiefs everywhere, from Kelce showing off his wedding ring at training camp to outside voices weighing in on the relationship.
