Florida State’s coaching search could be headed straight back to a very familiar face.
With the Mike Norvell era expected to end in the near future, and the university having already opened the week by firing athletic director Michael Alford, the Seminoles are reportedly looking at a possible reunion with Jimbo Fisher. According to college football insider Bruce Feldman, Fisher is on Florida State’s radar if the job opens up.
Fisher already knows the program well. He coached the Seminoles for eight seasons from 2010 through 2017, putting together an 83-23 record while winning three ACC championships from 2012-2014 and the 2013 national championship.
There’s also belief on Fisher’s side that a return could happen. According to reports, Fisher "really wants" the FSU job if it becomes available and hopes a reunion between the two sides can happen.
The question is whether Fisher would fit the sport as it looks now. Since leaving Florida State, he spent the 2018-2023 seasons at Texas A&M, where he went 45-25 before being fired just two weeks before the end of the 2023 season. His exit from college football came just before the transfer portal and NIL reshaped the game, and that leaves a real question about whether he can adjust to the new roster-building era.
All of this could end up irrelevant if Norvell somehow rallies the Seminoles into a wild finish and a College Football Playoff spot. That remains a long shot, though, and the bigger question now is when the decision on Norvell comes and whether Florida State turns to Fisher if it does.
