The Washington Commanders have finally checked a major box in their offseason work, reportedly landing Stefon Diggs to give their offense the kind of receiver help it badly needed.
NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported the move, calling it a signing of the four-time Pro Bowl wideout. ESPN’s Adam Schefter added that Diggs is getting a one-year deal worth up to $12 million.
“BREAKING: The Commanders are signing 4x Pro Bowl WR Stefon Diggs, multiple sources tell me,” Schultz reported.
For Washington, this is a direct answer to one of the biggest questions on the roster. The Commanders needed a reliable No. 2 receiver alongside Terry McLaurin for quarterback Jayden Daniels, but they hadn’t solved that problem in free agency before this move. Their most notable addition at the position had been Clemson receiver Antonio Wiliams, taken in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft.
Diggs arrives after a 2025 season with the New England Patriots in which he posted his seventh career 1,000-yard campaign while operating as Drake Maye’s top target. New England later cut him earlier this offseason after his cap hit climbed to a level the team didn’t want to carry. After talks on a reworked contract didn’t get anywhere, the Patriots moved on.
There’s still plenty of intrigue around what Diggs can bring. He turns 33 in November, but he showed in 2025 that he can still produce at a high level. He’s also another season removed from the torn ACL he suffered in 2024, which leaves room for even more.
Put Diggs next to McLaurin, and Washington suddenly has a receiver pairing that looks a lot more dangerous for Daniels.
The move also shifts the conversation around Brandon Aiyuk. He had been seen as a possible target for the Commanders this offseason, but his situation with the San Francisco 49ers remains unresolved. Experts expect San Francisco to release him, though that hasn’t happened yet.
Aiyuk has said he wants to play for Washington, but his social media behavior hasn’t exactly helped his case. The Commanders may still have interest, but Diggs makes the need less urgent. He also comes with more certainty, especially with Aiyuk having not played a snap in the NFL since 2024 after missing all of last season while recovering from a torn ACL.
