Gregg Popovich is married again, and the new chapter comes with a familiar San Antonio connection.
The longtime Spurs coach tied the knot with Mary Barth Budenholzer in a private ceremony in Texas on September 16, according to a marriage license filed in Bexar County, Texas. TMZ Sports reported the marriage and identified her as the former wife of Mike Budenholzer, who spent years on Popovich’s coaching staff.
“According to a marriage license obtained by TMZ … Popovich has tied the knot with Mary Barth Budenholzer, formerly known as Mrs. Mike Budenholzer … who worked very closely with Coach Pop to win 5 NBA Championship rings for the Spurs,” the report states.
Popovich, 77, is a widower. He was married to his first wife, Erin, from 1976 until 2018. She died in April of 2018.
Mary Barth and Mike Budenholzer divorced a decade ago. Budenholzer, 57, was an assistant coach for the Spurs from 1996 until 2013 and helped San Antonio win four NBA championship teams during that stretch. He later went on to head-coaching jobs with the Hawks from 2013-18, the Bucks from 2018-23, where he won a championship, and Phoenix from 2024-25.
Popovich’s own run in San Antonio stretched from 1996 until 2025. He won five NBA titles, was inducted into the Hall of Fame, and officially retired in May of 2025 as he moved into a new role as president of basketball operations.
Mitch Johnson took over as the Spurs’ head coach and led the team to an NBA Finals appearance last June.
