The brand-new Highmark Stadium isn’t even into its regular-season life yet, and the field is already getting a refresh.
The Buffalo Bills will face the Detroit Lions on Sept. 17 in the first regular-season game at the new stadium, but the natural grass surface will have been replaced before kickoff. The Kentucky bluegrass has been peeled back, exposing the layer underneath while crews work to put down a new surface.
A green tractor was out on the field during the process, and the sprinklers were running as the re-sod got underway. The full installation is expected to be finished by the end of the week.
Bills President Pete Guelli said the team is “committed to having the best possible surface for our players.” He added that with three straight home games early in the season, the club saw this as the right window to make the change.
Guelli also said in part, “We will continue to monitor the field and every aspect of our new stadium to ensure it is the best possible experience for our players and fans.”
The switch to natural grass marked a significant change for the new stadium, since the Bills used artificial turf across the street before moving into the new building.
Before the stadium opened, WIVB News 4 reported on the systems built to support the grass, including drainage equipment designed to pump and remove air and water, along with a heating system meant to help the grass grow through winter.
