Kalen DeBoer and Alabama are wasting no time building the 2028 class, and the Crimson Tide may already be in position to land one of the state’s top young linemen.
On Monday, On3’s Steve Wiltfong put in a Rivals Prediction Machine forecast with 60% confidence for Alabama to land Huntsville 4-star offensive lineman Joey Fleming, the No. 37 overall player in the composite and the No. 2 player in Alabama. The prediction came one day after Alabama added 4-star EDGE Tysir Young, pushing the Tide’s 2028 haul to seven commitments and keeping the class at No. 1.
That kind of early pace stands out. Alabama’s 2025 and 2026 classes eventually finished in the Top 5, but both took longer to come together. This group has moved fast.
Fleming is one of the biggest names in the cycle and one of two Huntsville offensive linemen Alabama is targeting heavily. He also could matter beyond his own recruitment.
If the Tide can get Fleming locked in early, it may help with Samuel Bailey, another major in-state offensive line target who is ranked inside the Top 50 overall and among the top five players in Alabama for that class. Landing both would be the kind of pairing Alabama wants up front.
The Tide’s approach on the offensive line has shifted from last cycle. After adding 11 offensive linemen with multiple seasons of eligibility through the Transfer Portal and the high school ranks this past offseason, Alabama didn’t make the position a major focus in 2027. Right now, 3-star Stafford Willis is the only committed offensive lineman in that class.
2028 looks different. Alabama already has a commitment from 4-star Anthony Blalock Jr., though it will have to hold off Ohio State over the next year and change to keep him. Fleming would be another major piece in that group.
He also fits the profile DeBoer and Ryan Grubb have traditionally wanted. Fleming used to play tight end, and that background shows up in his movement skills, space ability, and the way he can get downfield and finish blocks in the run game.
The competition is already there. Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Texas, Texas A&M, and others have all offered Fleming and remain in the mix. Alabama is in a strong spot early, but there’s still a long way to go.

With a defense that has room for depth to matter, Taylor is positioning himself as more than just a useful reserve.
Taylors path has been helped by the kind of opportunity young players need at a place like Alabama, and he has made enough of it to keep his name in the conversation heading into fall camp. Kane Wommack and Kalen DeBoer have shown they will rotate on merit, which gives Taylor a real opening if he keeps stacking strong practices. Kalen DeBoer May Face Alabama QB Call He Never Wanted
Kalen DeBoer has made no secret of what he wants at quarterback: one starter, one clear hierarchy and no weekly juggling act. That preference makes sense in a system that values rhythm and command, but Alabama may be headed toward a more complicated answer entering 2026 because both Austin Mack and Keelon Russell have so little game experience behind them.
Mack has only a handful of appearances on his rsum, and Russell is still just a freshman with even less exposure. With that kind of uncertainty, the Tide could be tempted to ease both into the job early rather than hand the offense to one and hope the other stays ready, even if DeBoer would rather avoid that kind of split. Alabama May Already Be Leaning One Way In A Crucial Linebacker Battle
Alabamas defense is headed for a reset in 2026, and the linebacker room is one of the biggest pieces of that puzzle. Virginia Tech transfer Caleb Woodson is expected to step in as the Mike linebacker, giving the Tide a veteran anchor in the middle, while the spot next to him is shaping up as one of the more watched battles on the roster. Junior QB Reese has already done enough to put himself in the mix, with teammates and former players taking notice of the way he has developed.
Reese is not running away with the job, though, and that is what makes the competition worth following. Luke Metz is among the players pushing for that other starting role, and Alabama will spend the spring and summer trying to sort out who fits best beside Woodson. Reese has shown promise in previous seasons, and the buzz around him suggests he has a real chance to seize the opportunity, but the final call in that room still has some sorting out to do.
