Alabama’s 2028 recruiting run is already looking like a statement, and the Crimson Tide may not be done adding blue-chip talent up front.
Fresh off the commitment of 4-star EDGE Tysir Young on Sunday afternoon, Alabama sits at No. 1 in the 2028 class with seven pledges. Four of those have come in July alone, a quick burst that has helped change the conversation after a rocky 2027 cycle.
Now another elite pass rusher is on the Tide’s radar.
Per On3/Rivals VP Steve Wiltfong, Alabama is among the early frontrunners for 4-star EDGE Cam Toomey out of Saratoga Springs, New York. Toomey is ranked No. 47 overall in the 2028 composite right now, and Wiltfong noted that Tennessee and Penn State are also in the mix:

Toomey brings the kind of frame that jumps off the page for a rising junior. He’s listed at 6-foot-4 and 245 pounds, and he likely fits as a Bandit in Kane Wommack’s defensive system if he keeps adding size over the next couple of years.
The competition is already stacked. Along with Alabama, Tennessee, and Penn State, Toomey holds offers from Florida, Florida State, LSU, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oregon, and others.
A decision doesn’t appear close, but Toomey would be another major win for a 2028 class that is building real momentum. Alabama already has four 4-star commitments in the cycle: Young, QB Kingston Preyear, OL Anthony Blalock Jr., and CB Braylen Gibbs.
That kind of start matters after the frustration surrounding 2027, when high-profile misses and the program’s lowest recruiting ranking since online rankings became a thing had plenty of Alabama fans uneasy. DeBoer had said all along that 2027 would be a smaller class and not one the staff poured heavily into, but the results still sparked concern.
The early 2028 surge is helping calm that noise. There’s a long way to go before the early signing period next December, but Alabama’s staff - led by DeBoer and GM Courtney Morgan - has clearly made a fast, aggressive push to reset the narrative.

Kalen DeBoer May Face Alabama QB Call He Never Wanted
Kalen DeBoer has made no secret of what he wants at quarterback: one starter, one clear hierarchy and no weekly juggling act. That preference makes sense in a system that values rhythm and command, but Alabama may be headed toward a more complicated answer entering 2026 because both Austin Mack and Keelon Russell have so little game experience behind them.
Mack has only a handful of appearances on his rsum, and Russell is still just a freshman with even less exposure. With that kind of uncertainty, the Tide could be tempted to ease both into the job early rather than hand the offense to one and hope the other stays ready, even if DeBoer would rather avoid that kind of split. Alabama May Already Be Leaning One Way In A Crucial Linebacker Battle
Alabamas defense is headed for a reset in 2026, and the linebacker room is one of the biggest pieces of that puzzle. Virginia Tech transfer Caleb Woodson is expected to step in as the Mike linebacker, giving the Tide a veteran anchor in the middle, while the spot next to him is shaping up as one of the more watched battles on the roster. Junior QB Reese has already done enough to put himself in the mix, with teammates and former players taking notice of the way he has developed.
Reese is not running away with the job, though, and that is what makes the competition worth following. Luke Metz is among the players pushing for that other starting role, and Alabama will spend the spring and summer trying to sort out who fits best beside Woodson.
